i bought a couple 20# chunks from a dealer. considering the cost i decided to slow down. and ive been getting some great spalls instead of ruining it. i stopped using my leg, i found i get better flake travel if i hold it freehand.  then once it is thinned out and i need more accuracy i will lay it on my leg. jasper isnt that tough of a rock either. well not compared to some of the ct and texas concrete im used to.

Nice job, when I see fine points like that, makes me want to try harder. Do you have to heat treat the Jasper?

it helps to heat it a bit .  you can do it easy enough in the oven too.

There are many different types of jasper!  Some need no heating and some require lots of heat, ie bruneau jasper 7/8 hundred for extended hours.  I like it because it can be very honest witha flake traveling in the direction you send it.  It was used in the Northern Wyoming mountains for many centuries.  Joe

Good to know.I've worked with Pa jasper and I don't believe it needs heat. I believe the stuff I'm working with comes from australia. I threw a couple of spalls in a roaster pan and cooked it at 400 for a couple hrs and noticed a significant difference. Either that or its because I'm really paying attention to what I'm doing lately.
