This is Yew D/R character bow that was made from a highly deflexed stave. The stave had over 6" of natural deflex, so It was best suited for a Deflex/Reflexd bow. Often we are so busy looking for straight or naturally reflexed staves that we overlook the potential that is in natural deflexed staves.
This bow is 68" Tip to Tip and comes in at 61 lbs at 28 inches. It has been tillered out to 30 inches and even pulled to 31 several times. The tips are zebra wood ad the finish is minwax polyurethane.

Nah. Not shiny enough ;) Will be looking forward to this one

Yes John, I generally roll them fairly soon. The sharper corners are easy to lift a splinter. And if you wait till near draw weight, rounding those corners can easily bring you in under weight. ;)
Thanks guys, Wasn't sure if this one was going to hold together with all the knots but I've had it to 31" several times on the tree and she's doing good.
-
o.k. thats what i was thinking..because it is wood removed..thanks john
-
That first side view is very sexy! Looking forward to seeing it ALL! ;D
-
Just one leg at a time Pat, Remember the best teases don't show everything. ;D :D >:D
-
Oh my, I better remember to be sitting down before I look at this one :o
-
What Pat B said....Sexy! :o
-
any more on this one, Keenan?
This must be that high elevation yew you told me about a few months ago...can't really make out any rings...
love the shape
-
So is she gonna be bare? you will you cover her with some leather? ;)
-
That is not fair Keenan. It is like that time when I was a kid at the county fair with my cousin, and we were peeking under the girlie show tent, and if that one big guy would just move, the mystery would be solved. ;)
-
Many had asked for more pics so I modified my post and added some pics. The first is the original stave .

-
awesome Keenan :o
-
That's just grand! I've been thinking about making a R/D selfbow for a while now and after seeing yours and Ryano's I really want to make one. But I have a question. How do you set in the reflex so it stays reflexed instead of coming out during tillering?
-
Agree, awesome Keenan. Love the character on that one, and the finish job in fantastic. :o
-
:o Man that is one awesome looking bow. Very impressive.
-
you are a brave man mr. Keenan.. all them bumps and swirls.. wow.. very nicely done.
-
stunning!
-
This might be the best looking Yew bow I have seen...!
-
I'm amazed at what you were able to accomplish with a piece of wood that most of us would have discarded. The tips, handle, curves, character - they all flow naturally together to make this superub bow. I tip my hat to the master.
-
hang that up in an art gallery!!
-

No, not at all. It's a high density piece of yew. That is exactly the kind of yew that you keep. It also has good character.
This bow is why we make wood bows. It's a d*mn inspiration, it is.
Nominate this for bow of the year.

Thanks Jesse,
Ryoon, Thank you, Yew will heat form very well. Just go slow and try for a deep penetrating heat and use some lard to keep it from drying to much. I always try to bend just a touch past what I want for the end result. Things always settle in some. The The original reflexed area was slightly in front of the handle before tillering. The nice part is that the inner two thirds of the limbs are almost the same as the original stave. ;)
Barrage and Rick, Thank you.
Majsnuff, Thank you , Don't think I was brave. I almost backed it but wasn'tsure I could keep the skin or sinew down around the bumps so this seemed the best option. Like Shamas said, Good tight ringed Yew. ;)
Thank you Medicinewheel.
Thank you Gordon, I hate to say it, but I think I did throw a few potential bows away year ago. ::)
Thank you mox.
Shamus, Thank you Yes it's high density yew. Not sure what elevation this one came from but it looks to be about 4 rings per 1/16 of an inch. Had to use a magnifier to count. With that as an average it would be around 64 rings per inch. ;)
-
What a treat! and following on the heels of your fine January Bow! Very nice! You have honored that piece of yew, Keenan! :)
-
Thank you, Oldbow. Still working on the new year resolution to finish what I start. ::)
