Title: Something old and something new
Post by: FlintWalker on January 07, 2010, 02:30:02 pm
Here's a Lost Lake I knocked out of a really nice piece of Carter Cave.  I have a pretty decent Lost Lake in my collection, so I used it for a reference.  I'm happy with the way it turned out. The notches are a little wider on the authentic one, but I've seen them with norrow notches too.

Nice work Shannon I would guess the notches were done with bone or antler on the real one hence their wider :)

You're right Dana. I have seen authentic ones that had super narrow notches though.  I done those with a horseshoe nail.  My butt puckered every time I hit it.

Tim, I have a Overstreet artifact guide that I use for reference. It shows several pictures of each point type and gives little ID tips about them. It comes in very handy.  I didn't actually look at mine till after I had made this one. I just went by what the book showed. In fairness, I have studied several authentic Lost Lakes before, so I already knew exactly what they look like.
You should look into getting one of those books. Besides good info for the knapper, they're very intersting to study. I bet I've looked through mine a thousand times.

Jesse, that's a piece of Carter Cave I got from Dennis.  It does look a lot like Flint river.
