Title: Medicinewheel's Osage is December Self Bow of the Month
Post by: OldBow on January 06, 2010, 08:24:41 pm
Congratulations to Frank (medicine wheel) Reinshagen, Mechernich, Germany
His very crafty osage bow is December 2009 Self Bow of the Month
http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php/topic,16577.0.html
I just finished a Hungarian Osage bow that came out nice, and I thought it's worth sharing.

The guy I made it for has a 31" pull so I made the bow 69" ntn, draw weight was 55#@31" after shooting her some.
The bow has holmegaardish tips that are flipped up a bit which gives it a nice side profile and adds some speed.
Has a black-dyed rawhide backing, a handle of python leather and buffalo horn overlays.

I had some problems while tillering (see   http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php/topic,15904.0.html  ) due to being spliced from billets not matching too well but in the end tiller came out nice. I had purchased the spliced stave from an Hungarian supplier, wasn't to sure of the integrity of the back either, that's why I put on rawhide after first time shooting her.
Had a bit of set that I could get rid of using the heatgun, so the tips are right in front of the handle when unbraced
It is linnen wrapped in Tidebond2, dyed with permanganate, sealed with tb2 and waterproof boat laquer.
The crack you may want to first superglue dry, degreased rawhide (fleshside out!) to it, and then wrap tight as described above.
Hope that helps to save your bow! The wrapping above and below the handle is done that same way.
As you can see I could not really do much about the lower limb being a bit stiff right out of the fade, when I tried the tiller began to flip; but the bow is long and certainly stores enough energy the way it is, and there was no balance problem at all.
She has a pull soft as butter and flings my regular arrows of 75#-spine, 29" as if they where tuned for her; I am truely impressed by the performance!
Forum Members really like this bow:
-"Medicinewheel, I couldn't help but take another look at your photos this morning, and like before Wow!
What did you wrap around the bow I'm guessing eight to ten inches from the tips, it looks nice. I think
that kind of wrap would help me cover a lateral heat crack on the belly of an Ash bow I've made
." Lombard
-"Seeing your work always gives me incentive to try to make my bows a little better. Your tips on tip overlays helped me a lot .
I wish I lived around the corner so that you could show me firsthand how to turn out a great bow!!! "
barebo
-"like the others have said very sweet looking love the grip and tips." Hammertime
-"A very fine looking bow, shooting is a pleasure I bet. The flipped tips are just beautifull." Cooper
-"Frank, I just got around to seeing your new bow. WOW! You always display beautiful work, but this may be the best one I've seen from you yet." Dane

Congratulations, really liked your bow, about the first time I actually voted for the same bow as the majority of the other voters.      Kenneth

Oh WOW! I just came back from being on the road and getting stuck in heavy wheather, so sorry for my late reply!
This is awsome, I really thought Nathan's laburnum bow would make it, and I thought (as it showed true) it was a large field of competitors! And now I find  mine to be BOM.
So, thanks a lot for all the nice comments and the votes.
Frank
Ps: I have posted this bow at a German Archery side (Fletcher's Corner) and it won BOM there, too!
