Title: "Sweet Imperfections"
Post by: Kegan on January 06, 2010, 07:17:50 pm
Well, I really like how this bow shoots, but I messed the finish up something awful by being in a rush and indecisive about how to get the finish perfect (oh the irony ;D). Anyway, this actually turned out to be one of my best bows yet, and my new favorite design: the pyramid R/D!

66" between the nocks, 2" at the widest. Hickory, it pulls 75# at 30" and shoots faster than my 80# and 88#. Stores more energy, and puts more of it in the arrow. I could have narrowed the 3/8" wide nocks much more, but this was my first shot. The handle was a little shallow so I built it up with that leather. One of the easiest bows I've tillered- the stupid finish being the hardest part. Flat belly not really tempered, despite the low set (about 1/2" top limb, 1" bottom limb). This is the hardest, fastest shooting bow I've ever made- despite some bows that were much heavier. And man does it shoot straight ;). I intend to do many more in this style, hopefully a few that actually look nice ;)!

I named it "Sweet Imperfections" because despite looking like a mess it shoots like a dream, and my first bow applying proper bow design to a heavy weight. I'll be using this one for the upcoming school talent show.

Thanks all!

Tom- here's a picture of the tips, jsut plain ol' pin nocks. That gray is a mistake with a Sharpie.

Legionnaire- Yeah, as Justin siad this one is a "light weight" for me :D. As I mentioned, my other two bows are 80# and 88#... makes me really appreciate this one!

Saw Filer- They could be scrawnier, still not as nice and light as yours!

Mike- yes they are! I think their will be several more in my future...

Nice job Kegan, I really like those tiny tips. You should do a bit of flight shooting for distanceto test your bows and their performance. It is about the first thing I do with a new bow. I would be intrested to know how far your bows will shoot.    Kenneth

Howdy Kegan,

Did you use heat or steam to induse the R/D curves?

I admire your bow(s), and the fact that you can turn them out so quickly.  This bow looks especially well designed / built, it looks real fast and sweet.

All the Best,
Canoe

Nice job Kegan!  It does look like it would be fast.  I was also wondering if you had actually chronoed it.  I'm still amazed that you can draw such heavy weight bows!

Quite the tips. Obviously you know how to make a bow with string alignment. Bookmarked, too, for Jan Self BOM

Thanks everyone, I truly appreciate all the kind words :)

Kenneth- when the weather breaks and the snow lifts, I'm going out to the gas line to see how well it shoots at 100 yards. Right now I can't even see where the point-on ditance with this bow is yet.

Sulphur- I bareshaft the bow to the arrows, filing away the arrow pass until it shoots perfectly (kinda like a plunger with Olympic recurves). On this one I went a step further to radius the front of the arrow pass in case of torque. This is defiantely my most high-tech handle yet :D

Canoe- I used the heat gun on this one. I kept having to adjust the amounts of deflex in the limbs during tillering, saved alot of scraping and possible weight loss. Everything considered though, I relaly do think this was the easiest bow I've tillered in a very long time.

Zen- no, but I'd love to chronograph this thing. Actually, I'd like to chronograph all my bows, but this one just seems the only one that might not make me embarrased ;D

And thanks again everyone :)

Thanks guys :)

crooketarrow- I've seen much longer draws on selfbows before (at higher weights too!)- and as long as it won't punish me with lots of set I'll keep pulling 'em back that far ;D.

Thanks guys ;D

I just wanted to shoot heavy weights (obviously after reading Hill's book) and kept building stronger and stronger bows when I started. When I started it was the easiest way to make a bow shoot faster too. Now I'm just an addict ;D.

Wow, beautiful bow Kegan.  Those Narrow, light tips really make a big difference.  I made an osage bow with very light, narrow tips, and it shoots surprisingly fast considering it's light weight (about 45#). It also has very little handshock, again due to the light tips.  I think that really helps with good, accurate arrow flight too.  Great job on that one dude!

Thanks Billy! Light tips really are effective, especially on stiff limbs. I made an ELB a while ago with very light tips, but it bent all along it's length and wasn't as fast as it could be.

On my next one I'm going to try even more narrow tips with more reflex curved into the limbs... should be a rocket launcher >:D!!!
