Title: 2009 Deer Season...
Post by: Mechslasher on January 05, 2010, 10:58:24 am
is over for me here in sc.  :'( i did manage to kill a five pointer with my flintlock but i'm 0/3 with my bow.   missed a doe, twice, the early part of the season and then nicked the biggest buck i've shot at with trad equipment the first of nov.  to give an idea how my season went.  dec. 29th i hunted over a 50 acre kudzu field.  during the last 45 min. of daylight i saw two 16+" eight pointers, two small sixes, and 16 does come out in various locations and feed on the rye grass growing in the dead kudzu.  dec. 30th, i set up a ground blind where the eights and several does came out.  i had cover on three sides.  you guessed it, the does came out directly behind me.  they saw me, but didn't know what i was.  dec. 31 i set up a lock on in a tree near the ground blind.  didn't see anything that day or jan. 1st.  i might have spooked those does but not the rest.  i must have some deer repellent somewhere on me.

Chris:  Sounds like you had lots of fun and had some good days in the field!  Wish I had a nickle for every time I came home with no meat to show for lots of effort!  Joe

joe, i had a very good season seeing/watching deer, but just couldn't get the shots i wanted.  i learned a lot about the piece of property i've been hunting this season.  i thought i had the deer figured out on it, but a f3 tornado went through the place last summer and shifted the trail patterns i had learned and set stands up on.  i'm planning on setting up some feeders, and trail cams, to help the deer through this winter.  i'm thinking it'll pay off big next season.

Well I killed a 7 pointer with my bow and its a darn good thing I didn't pass him up or I'd of been eating tag soup.  This has been the worst hunting season here ever for the amount of deer seen....it's a good thing I made good on that shot cause it was my only opertunity. It seems the deer #'s are way down around here this year and the ones that are left are almost 100% nocturnal.

Sounds like a rough hunt. I feel your pain, nature can sure mess with your plans. I had been scouting a 40"+ mule deer a couple of years ago. I knew where he watered every day and where his favorite escape trail was. Three days before the bowhunt a fire went through and burned 50,000 acres. There wasn't a bush or deer left in the entire area.

I didn't even see a deer in the woods this year. tons and tons of fresh scrapes, rubs, droppings, you name it, just no deer. oh well, it's still fun  ;D

justin, i had a trail pegged that i saw dozens of deer walk down onto a railroad track to feed on kudzu last year.  the f3 pushed over two 100+ year old water oaks, effectively blocking the entire section and ruining two of the best crossings i had planned to hunt this year.  one of the oaks had kudzu growing over it, making one of the best ground blinds i've ever had.  i definitely missed that tree this past season.

It was a long and sometimes frustrating season for me.
I had several opportunities during the bow season, including a 22 yd. shot at a nice 10 pointer.
I missed on them all!
Late in the firearms season I managed to tag a doe and this 8 pointer.

It sure felt good to put meet in the freezer.

Hmm... didn't know you were allowed to hunt with a semi auto pistol Mike. They only allow revolvers here in Pa with a special permit. How far away was that deer when you shot it? Probably in bow range? lol...... ;D

This was a better season for me than last year and still have two weeks left. Last year I got 28 hogs and no deer. This year I didn't get a shot during archery but got two does with my sidelock black powder and a 3 pt, with my flintlock. I got two turkeys last weekend with the BP shotgun. I also had a sow bear about 250# sniff me at less than 2' and then haul butt when she new it was a people. That was exciting, I had the barrel of my muzzleloader about 3' from her face with the double set trigger already set. It has been a fun year so far.

That's cool Mike. The only thing semi auto we're allowed for hunting is a shotgun plugged for 3 shells, for small game, turkey and migratory birds only.  Pa has the most (strict) annoying game laws of any state I've hunted in.

I have to agree about Pa. Ryan. I couldn't believe after flying in on a Friday night to hunt opening day Turkey on Saturday that I couldn't hunt them on Sunday. That is nuts! We can hunt with Semi-auto pistols in Florida, too. I got that big hog with the Sig45 this year and a turkey last year with a semi-auto 22 S&W with a Red dot.
