Title: Sea glass
Post by: StevenT on December 27, 2009, 04:36:47 pm
I thought you knappers might like this. I was walking the beach in Cape Charles looking for sea glass when I found this piece. It has three really nice flakes. I was a little jealous that mother nature was able to produce these three long, wide, parallel flakes.

you can get flakes like that, it`s simple...
prepare the edge (with lots of abraiding... )
set it up for the flaking tool of your choice,
squint at it with your left eye closed & tilt your head
off to the right a little bit... NO... not that much, just
a little... there ya go, now you got it...
build pressure slowly & lean into it some, yeah, like that...
flick your wrist to the left a little & it`ll pop off just like
ya want it to, or if you`re like me, you`ll have 2 smaller pieces
of glass to cut yourself with...    :o  Was there any more of that
good beach glass out there?

Hey Lobo,
The sea glass is getting harder and harder to find. I do have one spot that every now and then I find something like this that is a little thicker and can possibly be knapped. There is a lot of starving artist in the area that keep the beaches pretty picked over trying to find sea glass to make jewelry out of. This particular piece I normally would have thrown back in the ocean because it is what we call half backed. It doesn't have that well worn frosted look. But with those flakes, I just had to keep it.

As for the helpful hint.... I have that down pat.... both the bleeding and how to make two pieces from one.   :)

That's proof that mermaids are knappers, or maybe the dolphins are finally putting their brains to use and getting into the stone age-we may be in trouble...;D
