With A LOT of help from a blacksmith I forged a heavy skinner from an old file and a tomahawk from an old carpenter's ax 3 weeks ago; the hawk is still waiting for a handle, but the knife I just finished yesterday by putting on moose antler scales. That knife really feels 'tailored'!
Thanks for looking!

Nice set, Frank. I love Hawks.

Thanks mullet!
I have a nice piece of hard maple here for the handle...
-
Cool pair!
Saw them in real and I like the skinner.
Maybe I could help you to finish the sheath.

LOVE that hawk head 8)
wanna make me one ;D
-
nice work. Could you detail your forging process for me in a little detail. I am particularly in the knife from the file. Thanks for any help. Banoch
-
Thanks Buggi, sailordad, banoch!
@ banoch:l I did the forging out of the cutting edge and the rough shape as the blacksmith told me to, after that he evened out the tang with the spring hammer, the edge is hardened and quenched in veggie oil. I can't really tell it more detailed, was the first time I've done that.
@ sailor: The hawk head I cut out from a way bigger carpenter's ax (it provided material for another hawk, as well), cutting edge forged, hardended and quenched, maybe I can offer that one for a trade some time later!
Again thanks everybody, I really appreciate it!

I'll bet you could split a playing card with that hawk head! I've been wanting to make a hawk myself. I have some spring steel from a truck here, could I use that for forging?
-
Yes , I'm sure you could! ...and yes it's sharpe!
-
Well however you did it they look fine.
-
Thanks again banoch!
-
great work. i love foraged stuff. i really want that tommahawk! all the ones i find have the stinkin spike on the back. ;D
-
Finally got around making a sheath for the skinner today. It's calf leather lined with dear rawhide.
-
That came out real good, Frank. That is my favorite carry style. You can sit down without it being in the way.
-
Now that's some mighty fine work!
-
Thanks Eddie, thanks Jon!
PS: Eddie it's the first of that type sheath I made/used and yes, it's really comfortable to wear! Also thought it was the right style to go with the large skinner, too.
-
sweet looking knife-looks like it would just fit in yr hand. nice!
-
Nice work, Frank. I'm glad you brought it back around. I must have missed it the first time.
-
Very cool piece of work I really like the hawk head.Ron
-
Beautiful work ,both times,I like them a lot. :)
Pappy

Thanks guys!
@sadiejane: yes, the moose antler scales are tailored to fit my hand; it's a big heavy knife but feels nice and dandy due to the perfect handle.
-
Good looking tools. The moose is really nice. I've only used white tail antler, bone and wood. You ever get the hawk done? ??? Like to see it too. Great job!!
-
Yes Sir,
That's some good looking Steel!
And a nice looking sheath too boot!
-gus

Thanks bowtarist, thanks Gus!
-
I like the knife and hawk, but I love the sheath. I don't think I've seen one of that sort before.
-
Dang nice work Frank, like em both.
-
Thanks stretch; I think the sheath is in style for the knife, I believe (I'm not sure) the buffalo hunters had that sort sheath.
Thanks yeti.
-
looks great
-
how did you do the larger bevel it looks as though you hammered it ? it would make sense i'v never really seen why you'd have to grind all that steel out ;)looks great and nothin cuts like aknife youve made yourself :o
-
Thanks guys!
Yes the bevel is hammered; that was my part in the forging process.
-
very cool ought to do the job
