Title: Home made draw knive & push knife
Post by: Kirkll on December 10, 2009, 11:47:58 pm
"Necessity.... the mother of invention" i think that's how it goes...

well i'm just getting into this wood bow stuff here, and you think i can find my draw knives? Nooooooo...

So i came up with a couple planer blades that were good and sharp, with a chunk knocked out of the center, and decided to make a couple knives here.
the handles are red oak, and the steel pins are maid from old 20 penny nails...

Great! - Are these drawknives or would you use them as scrapers??

Sweet!  I wonder if old lawnmower blades would work......   :)

Lawn more blades make great hatchets...no so much knives, in my experience.

Great knives!

Another great, homemade drawknife made on the cheap is a simple piece of 1/8" X 4" mild steel strap, 18" long.  At 5" from either end, cut halfway through the width of the strap, then hammer that portion over to double it to make handles.  The sharpen the center, on the side offset from your "handles" (the blade being up a bit helps protect your hands in case of a "slip").  Wrap your handles with vynil tape or whatever, keep your edge sharp, and go to town.  Cost $4 if you buy the steel...but a lot of welding shops will give the steel away for free as it's scrap.

glad you like em guys... i'm an old pack rat from way back, i scrounge materials where ever i can and love taking something that is headed for the dump, and transform it into something useful. i've had those planer blades for 20 years thinking they might come in handy. so i'm tickled with them. this is carbide steel too. you want to talk about hold an edge.... wow!   they do double as decent scrapers too.

i was working on a job 1100 miles from home this fall, and ran into a guy that was trying to cut stainless steel shower rods with the wrong saw... i showed him a few tricks, and got him going..... next thing you know he's going to town cutting these things and they were rolling off the bench now and then hitting the concrete floor......it kept getting my attention due to the different musical tones they were making.......Hmmmmm.....next thing I know he's got this big pile of 12" scraps he's going to throw away....so i asked if i could have them.....i boxed up 100 of these 1" tubes and shipped them home...... i am in the process of making Christmas presents out of this stuff.... they make the coolest wind chimes you can imagine..... so the whole family is getting wind chimes this year....

now that's what i call recycling. :D
