heres a 68 1/2" dogwood floortillered stave i'm working on thats seasoned real well.(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l338/knap_123/dogwood011-1.jpg)(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l338/knap_123/dogwood013.jpg)(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l338/knap_123/dogwood012.jpg)(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l338/knap_123/dogwood016.jpg)(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l338/knap_123/dogwood018.jpg)(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l338/knap_123/dogwood019.jpg)(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l338/knap_123/dogwood020.jpg)(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l338/knap_123/dogwood021.jpg) istill dont if i want to flip the tips or not. and wouald you suggest some reflex steamed in or not? i will put some tip overlays on and i might use antler or cow horn.
-
cool bow, cant wait to see it bendin! :) -josh
-
love the tips, they look like gordon's in the buildalong
-
Looks like its coming along well.
Dave

Looking good, should make a nice bow. The only dogwood stave I've fooled with so far responded well to heat treatment-you can heat treat the belly and add some reflex at the same time.
-
nice work so far man, shape is great.
what kind of arrow rest are you planning on? (if any)
one final note: can we take up a collection to buy this man a new tape measure? his is almost rusted through!
-
thanks guys, radius that is exactaly the style nocks i wanted. i heated the belly a little just before finishing floor iller and willl do again after brace height. innoncente, that made me laugh about the tape, but thats paint you see there. well most of it is anyway. :)
-
Great looking bow Knap. Looking forward to the finish product.
-
ok, well i got it to brace height at 5" and i think it looks good. did'nt pull it ant yet cause i want to heat the bottom after i se how muck of (http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l338/knap_123/abbysplaydogwood028.jpg)the string follow comes out. the string is lined up right over the handle(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l338/knap_123/abbysplaydogwood029.jpg) and right after unbraceing
(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l338/knap_123/abbysplaydogwood030.jpg)
-
wow knapp... looking great so far. Be sure to give it time to re-hydrate after heat treating it before bending it again. This one is turning out really nice! -josh :)
-
thank you josh and i'll give it a day when i'm done. heres the heating and and a little bending at the fades.(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l338/knap_123/002-1.jpg)(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l338/knap_123/003-3.jpg) i left the bottom unheate till remove the bow so i can add a different caul and bring the limbs on around and flip the tips.
-
love it so far, man! that is an insane reflex.
-
...I'd give it 3 or 4 days just to be safe... You've put alot of work into this just to have it splinter from being too dry... Looks cool! -josh :)
-
Going down the line of pictures I was going to mention how I love the knots and texture on the back...but then I got to the tape measure. That tape measure is my favorite part of this whole project. You should include the tape measure in every picture you take...just for kicks. It's awesome. Not kidding.
The bow is pretty slick, too. I like the style...can't wait to see pics of how the tempering took on the tree...with the tape measure, of course.
-
hers the reflex 2 1/2" but have'nt flipetthe tips yet. and sorry, forgot the tape for ya guys.(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l338/knap_123/004.jpg)
-
well it doesnt look like you have to worry about anyone stealing it with that big ole rooster guarding it. ;D -josh
-
Lookin' good knap.Is your stave from a limb or the trunk?I've been lookin' for a good piece of dogwood for years and I'm still lookin', God Bless
-
Best of luck with your dogwood bow, looking really good so far! I've made one that I just took a deer with the day before Thanksgiving. I had a pass through shot at 18 yards with it using a cane arrow and tradepoint. ;)
-
tnks guys, and it was a trunk pete. i've actually spotted 2 more good looking trees sitting in the stand.
-
well got my tips started.(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l338/knap_123/dogwoodtips003.jpg)(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l338/knap_123/dogwoodtips005.jpg) and i'm a little unhappy cause one has more bend than the other. and the one with te most bend developed a check on the belly side. but i filled it with super glue and iguess i'll move on to thetiller stick and not knit pick on every little thing.
-
Looks like you got her dressed up pretty well for the grand fanally.
-
Dogwood trunk bows are nice but anymore I back mine because they love to pull a splinter I use deer raw hide but I like around 60# @28 and sometimes the poundage over powers the backs strength I tried to post some pictures but they were to big and I don't know how to reduce them
-
Hey this gets beter everytime I look!
Very nice!
-
i've got at 45# @ c24" but my left limb is way different than right. how shou(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l338/knap_123/dogwoodsnakes002.jpg)ald i correct this? or does the t. need tp come on down some more?
-
Looking good. both limbs could work a bit more right out of the fades, and the right limb is a bit flat a little past mid-limb.
-
thanks billbilly, heres what i came up with. braced(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l338/knap_123/finishedtiller003.jpg) and (http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l338/knap_123/finishedtiller002.jpg) 45# @ 27" and right after unbraceing. (http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l338/knap_123/finishedtiller004.jpg) alot of my reflex pulled out, but thats ok, i think i'll heat the belly again and dress her up if yall approve of her.
-
Looking good! Have you ever thought about getting/making a tillering tree? That way you can ease it down gradually to full draw and not stress the limbs as much by leaving it very long on the board. Probably a little safer as well. ;)
-
that is an awesome looking Dogwood bow Knap! tiller looks great! -josh :)
-
i have, and actually started that today. but i lost the eyebolts i was going to use. so i'll have plan that for tomarrow.
-
That bow looks very earthy all the ones I have made all shot good one was shooting a 525 gr. at 165fps the rest took some set but it might not of been dry enough to start any real bending .I dyed mine with right dye and denatured Alc. so the deer hide wasn't so white in the woods silk works good to. The deer hide came from the same area I cut the trees from and was more in the spirit of the weapon.
-
Nice bow, thanks for bringing us along.
-
Do we approve of her? Yes sir, that's a nice bow! Good job on that dogwood.
-
Looks to me like you've got a shooter. Start pimping it. ;D

HAHA Hillbilly, I'm submitting a TV show idea to Versus TV immediately, call "Pimp you Bow" haha
-
How is that dog wood coming along the first two bows I made from dog wood tree trunks pulled up splinters just wondering how yours is doing with those knots on the back that is where my splinters popped up on the knots on the highest part of the crown I steamed the inner bark off and made sure the back was not cut any where I rubbed it off with a old copper chore girl scoring pad shot it maybe 100 plus and noticed the splinters at the knots

hey there Hillbilly, i'm a rookie at the primitive bows here. i got a question if you don't mind.... i'm curious why you think this bow needed the fades flexing more at 24"?
-
Nice looking bow, that should be a shooter,What Hillbilly means is the limbs ant bending much out of the fads and for a longer life and less set on the rest of the limb you could spread the bending a little more out of the fads to make more wood work. Not speaking for Hillbilly but I think that is what he means. If it is at weight now I would leave it alone but if you could stand to take off a little weight I would go where he said. :) Nice work,Dogwood is a beautiful wood when finished. :)

Yep, what Pappy said. :)
-
thats fantastic!
-
got y lastcoatof truoil dryingnow and will put a handle wrap andarrow rest on. man, i love this dogwood!! it really handled heat bending well and feels light in the hand.
-
the dog wood around Illinois is heavy and hard I have went into stand off the stuff and cut trees as big around as base balls down to golf ball size and it alway amazed me that it was so hard and heavy like pink Osage the smaller trees make for high crown target bows that I apply deer raw hide to keep the backs strong, it's the same wood that I have made arrow shafts from that wood will take a polish all by its self my buddy boned a walking stick he made till it looks polished. My bows like to take a little more set than i like and fell out of favor with me the recurves that I did pulled out about half way after about 300 arrows. That wood will stack tight like you hit a wall till you get it bending at your weight and draw length. when I cut the trunks for bows I found you better cut the limb down to pith on the side you want for the belly to keep it from just splitting to the core any where it wants I lost about seven trunks that way with the bark left on and the ends sealed tight. all the old dogwood bows I saw around had lots of set If I leave my bow strung for say 6 hours it really takes a while for it to return to its unstrung form.
-
Nice looking bow, you did a great job. I've been interested in trying dogwood. Looking foward to seeing it all finished up.
-
You don't have the dress on this thing yet?
A little late, but I did post a response to your pvc quiver question in the other section.
-
ok, here she is. cornbreads her name and 52# @ 27" with deer hide arrow rest, leather grip, and horn tips with a tip protector on my lower limb. i took her hnting this mourning and got a few pics from the stand but no luck.'ll go back this afternoon and hope to get one.(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l338/knap_123/dogwoodfinishsinewhawk026.jpg)(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l338/knap_123/dogwoodfinishsinewhawk027.jpg)(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l338/knap_123/dogwoodfinishsinewhawk031.jpg)(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l338/knap_123/dogwoodfinishsinewhawk028.jpg)(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l338/knap_123/dogwoodfinishsinewhawk029.jpg)(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l338/knap_123/dogwoodfinishsinewhawk030.jpg)(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l338/knap_123/dogwoodfinishsinewhawk033.jpg)(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l338/knap_123/dogwoodfinishsinewhawk036.jpg)(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l338/knap_123/dogwoodfinishsinewhawk037.jpg)(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l338/knap_123/dogwoodfinishsinewhawk046.jpg)(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l338/knap_123/dogwoodfinishsinewhawk059.jpg)

Knap,
Beautiful job on the bow, arrows too. I've had a dogwood stave on the rack for about fifteen years now, guess I'd better get to it. Thanks for the inspiration!!
