Title: basidian
Post by: sailordad on November 18, 2009, 10:24:59 pm
well i bought some slabs of what the guy called"arizona basidian"
its pretty cool looking rock, work pretty easy, kinda like dacite, but not quit
i get nervous when i work a new material, especially one that cost a pretty penny.and this stuff wasnt real cheap
i tried working one of the smaller slabs into a point or two, only to have failure >:( :-[ :'(
bit i doidnt let that stop me.
i grabbed one of the broken pieces and made a pont from it.

well i let it be for a few days, then i ordered some more.sat down and said to my self "self, its just rock dont worry about.just smack it"
so i went into the next slab with a "i dont give a damn, its just rock" attitude
heres what i ended up with, the smaller one is my fisrt succesfull point with this stuff, the larger one is the one i made with the new attitude.
let me know what ya think
thanks for looking

Look darn good to me Tim! That's some interesting looking rock too. There is something in AZ that's called Arizona dacite. From what I gathered it's got a green tint to it but may come in other colors and banded and such - dunno. I do recall hearing that it's quite brittle.

very nice work. when you feel like getting some bruises try the arizona basalt. its great stuff, just on the tough side. love the banding in that point

I worked some of that stuff identical to the left point with the bands.  It was a small, round pebble but I was able to make something out of it.  It is kinda brittle, but it's cool looking stone.  The guy who gave it to me also said it came from Arizona.  We need to find some big blocks of that stuff!

I took a drive around North Central AZ last summer looking for some of that stuff. Volcanic evidence everywhere but all I could find was lava :(. Anybody ever gets a lead on that stuff - let's go ;).

Does seem it's all about attitude, Tim. Good job! :)
Thanks for posting pics of this material, I've never seen it before.
It does look more like a dacite than an "idian".

I like the looks of that rock.  The points are great too.
I wouldn't mind trying some of it sometime myself.
