Title: My First Attempt with Osage (Not For BOM)
Post by: gmc on November 15, 2009, 01:35:57 pm
I had a little help from some nice folks on here with basic layout dimensions for this bow and promised I'd post the final result. So here it is, my first attempt with Osage. Thanks again guys for the help. I did make my 50 lbs. with a little to spare.
63''ntn and weighs 18.9 ounces pulling 55 lbs @ 28, 1 3/8 wide at the fades, 1/2 thick tapering to 5/16 wide at the tips. The finish is amber shellac, a few coats, with a linen wrap handle. I ventured out this time and made natual string with about 10 strands of linen. The tips don't align perfectly and the string is off center on the handle a little but but shots just fine.

I agree, very nice bow. From the looks of the full draw, braced and unbraced pics it shows you have been doing your homework! ;)

No reason, except maybe religion, that bow should not be posted for BOM. That is a very nice bow.

Thanks guys for all the nice comments! It's the fine bowyers on here willing to share information that makes this whole thing much more enjoyable.
Pappy: There was a lot first time doing things with this bow, so I don't know how much was me trying to survive the process or the wood. I don't think the wood was dry enough before I started but it wasn't loosing any weight over several days of monitoring, but still it was taking set way too early in the game. Also, having to chase a ring is another consideration with Osage, that's an added step that really adds to the process. But I will say Osage will allow you to fit your bow into a smaller package. Also very responsive to heat, this I know because this one got plenty. Now those comments are coming from a guy that's been living in the "white wood world" for awhile. I have another stave of Osage, I used the worst one on this bow so I will give it another shot soon. Guess I was looking for a little more magic from Osage but regardless of the wood, the destiny of any bow lies in the hands of the bowyer, right?
Thanks for your interest.
Greg

You live in the center of osage country...... ::) if I were you I'd probably wouldn't touch anything but yeller wood. ::) Nice job, I like to round my edges a bit more, gives less of a place to pull a splinter along the edge of the limb, also in the grip area where its mostly just for comfort and esthetic's. All and all a great job for your first though. Looks like you nailed the tiller. ;D

Thanks again guys for the nice comments.
Ryano: That's what folks keep telling me with where I live but I haven't been able to locate one yet. Guess I'm not looking hard enough. ::) Thanks for input on the bow, I should have ask for more in the post. I usually start with a more rounded corner but during tiller the edges seem to block back up on me. I will certainly keep that in mind for the next one. I had to feel my way around with this one. Eyes wide open on the next. Who knows, the next one may be a super-delux model. ;D
