Here's another BBO I just got finished. It is accented with IPE. Specs are...50#@28", 64"ntn.
This will be my last bamboo backed bow off of my current form. I am going to go with more R/D on my new form. Thanks to David for helping me on the design, although it won't be as much R/D as his are. I am currently working on a new selfbow as well. It sure feels good to get back to scapin' some 'Sage. It should be done soon. Hope you enjoy.

Danged nice and inspiring! Looks like you've been busy for awhile judging by the bow rack behind you :).
-
Real purty John, you do nice work!!
-
Paul, that's only what my wife will let me keep in the house... the rest is in the shop. ;D
Thanks Dano, you're one of the guys that inspire me to build bows!
-
Well, that's just a drop dead gorgeous bow! Very nice work.
-
nice bow man!! love the handle riser lams! :) -josh

Super nice! You should be proud of that one! I like the black and yellow one, but I think I like this one even better. If you get tired of it you can send it my way! ;)
-
oh god, you're giving me the laminate bug...get outa here!

Well S#@!*!!!! Glad this was the last one off this form... She blew up last night while I was shooting it. Started hearing a ticking sound, and Pow! Does anyone see anything wrong with the top limb? It popped about mid limb. I'll try to get pics up later. It broke about 3/4" below a node.
-
That's to bad,it looked good to me. :(

It looked so perfect, sorry to hear.
It would be really interesting and educational to find out why it broke. Midlimb is where this designs do most work I guess.
-
Looks like there was a few knots mid limb, but tiller looked great. Was this some of that osage Tommy and Terry had. Man, I hate to see all that hard work ruined. :'(
-
Yea Dano, that was a board I got from Tommy, but I don't think it had anything to do with the Osage, there were no knots in the immediate area of the break.. I'm thinking it was maybe a bad glue spot. It was making a ticking sound, so I kept shooting it to make it blow. I'm going to inspect the boo when I get home, but I don't think there was any flaws in it where it blew. KnightD spotted a hingy spot 8-10" out of the top fade before I even talked to him or told him where it broke. Thanks again for the help David.

I don't know, tiller looks good to me. You mentioned the failure was close to a node. I've stopped using bamboo for this very reason. Bamboo is so labour intensive, and inconsistent in my opinion. Hickory, maple and ash are my preferred backing materials these days. I live in a very dry climate also, and have a lot of checking with bamboo.
-
I just like to blame Tommy for everything I can ;D. It was good Oklahoma hedge I'm sure that wasn't the cause. David is prolly on to it, looking at that spot now it does look weaker, but maybe just cause you said that. ::) I'm not so dead against the bamboo, you just have to be careful where ya get it.

r.i.p.

what a bummer!! that was a sweetlooking bow, tiller looked good, I see no hinges or anything that would cause overdue stress. have you done a autopsy to see what caused the failure? maybe look for a spot that didnt glue right, maybe a dry pocket? I havent had a failure yet with bamboo backing, but I am sure it may happen.

Juniper Junkie - haven't seen you around in forever. That's sucks John :-\. I sure couldn't see anything wrong with it. That was one beauty while she lasted though.
-
Hate to see that. It was a beautiful bow. Think it was tension or compression failure?
-
I am no expert but it looks like right around the spot in the picture where the door moulding is at on the top limb. It was a beauty though. Flint
