Title: Red Elm / Slippery Elm / P*** Elm / American Elm??
Post by: coyote pup on November 02, 2009, 03:51:37 pm
I have some elm, cut in Southern Indiana. It has red heartwood that has quite a smell to it. Is this what they call P*** Elm? If so, what are American, Slippery, and Red Elm?

It could be winged elm.  It has a small dark red heart.  I think all of it smells bad.

Slippery Elm and Red Elm is the same tree ;)  American Elm is also called White Elm or Soft Elm and it has the same color all the way through to the heartwood.

Your elm is likely slippery /red elm. It has a reddish heartwood and is common in your area. American elm is commonly called "piss elm", as is Chinese or Siberian elm.
