Do some of you have some clever ideas for substituting having a shaving horse or ingenious ways to hold your boards and staves while you work your magic?
-
A vice and something to bolt it too. I built a heavy duty wood sawhorse and bolted a cheap wood vice to it.
-
I've worked a lot of bows sitting down with one end of the bow secured by my feet and the rest over a shoulder. It's called not having a vice. I wouldn't recommend roughing out a stave this way though ;D

I have a pedestal vise I welded up with my MIG.

I built one out of my wife's old water bed that had been stored in the garage for years. I used it just long enough to remember where my vice was located on the bench. The hot box I built out of the same wood has proven its keep. Greg

Mine is just like adb's...except much MUCH messier.

I have my vice bolted to a big wire spool so can roll it in and out of the basement.
-
Good Lord Pappy! How ya keep those machines from rusting? At least ya got vices enough for everybody at the bowyerin' party!
-
Tom, those vises of Pappy's never get a chance to rust. They are constantly used all year long.
-
I never could appreciate the tips moving as I worked them so had a unit made with adjustable supports. Hope the pics come up. Al

I guess waterbeds are only good for cutting up for other projects. :D
I really like that adjustabe limb support set-up. Neat deal! I've got a vise that rotates on two axis that I use for shaping knife scales. I was thinking that might work well for this undertaking.
-
Yeah. That with an adjustable support ought to give you all the angles you need.

Nope, that's a Nicholson #50 rasp.

Tom all the tool and saws are under roof ,I just wipe them down in the winter with wd40 to keep them from rusting. The botton run on the benches[especilly the one I use most] has the bottom
support just where I need so I set my foot up on it and the bow limb on my knee to support it while I am scraping or filing on it. The big heavy one made from a truck frame is mainly used for debarking Osage or Hickory,it is heavy enough so it won't move when you really get after one with the draw knife. :) I bought it at a sale for $7.00 no body even bid on it. It is great for what it is used for.Money well spent. ;) :)

I tried using a shaving horse. I just couldn't get used to it. Here's my set up.
