Im still working on my "Impossible" recurve....Ive got the limbs bending to where they will be at full brace....but the tips are way too long to get it at full brace yet....If I chop off an inch or two, deflex the handle and heat temper the belly will it be able to handle a longer draw length? It is 60" tip to tip right now....I have a 28 inch draw....I am also putting 3-4 layers of sinew on the back....how much weight can I expect to gain with that?

Are the recurved tips bending? Recurves that long should be bending by now, specially on such a short bow.
-
They are bending but I still have almost 4 inches of non bending on the tips

Pictures my friend, pictures ;D
-
Here are two pics....one unstrung and then one at close to full brace

this bow totaly looks like an asiatic hornbow without the horn,I would say sinew it and narrow the tips in width.you could also put tempered bamboo on the belly like the chinese did for their general military bows and wind up with a asiatic composite. If you do decide to put tempered bamboo on the belly do it before you put the sinew on.
-
forgot to mention if you do it the asiatic way,28 draw would be no problem for a bow that length,I am currently working on one that is 48 and aiming for a 30 draw.
-
I was thinking about the bamboo too...but I don't need a super stacked bow....I just want a hunting bow not a monster! 8) Will osage alone be able to handle the compression?

hey there and how y'all doing,
just a quick question on your bow--the tiller on the right is a little more the the left, is that intentional? some folks like a stiff tiller for the bottom limb, from what i have heard.

Looks good. Beautiful work so far. Jawge
-
Luke, the bow is a center shot...so my bottom limb is shorter than the right limb.

I wouldn't hesitate to cut those suckers and sinew it. You appear to have at least 4 inches of non bending tips that add a lot of weight. They are beyond the recurve, so cutting them wont effect the string angle. Since you are planning to sinew anyway, I wouldn't even hesitate to cut it. Be carefull you don't get a hinge on that left limb just over half way out. Justin
-
Thanks Justin, I noticed that could be problem area too...Its got a big X on it so I stay away from it now....
-Ky
-
I'd cut those limb tips off right at the second red band.
-
You have way too much recurve on that bow. If that was me I would do something a bit more radical. I would partially straighten out the recurve in from the second red band to gain some working limb, where the string leaves the wood on the first picture in fact. Then I would cut 1" from each tip. That with sinew should give you a half decent working bow
-
Well I cut the tips off just enough and now have about 5 inches or recurve...it brings the length down to 56"....overall I don't think it will change much on my bow's tiler...it will just be easier and should reduce my weight some. Its profile reminds me a lot of the bow Ryano made for GregB earlier this year.

How much did you take off. It will change the tiller a lot. You are removing a lot of leaver on the outside of the limbs. I think Marc is right. Maybe you should take out some of the recurve. The tips on this thing will still be pointing forward at full draw. In my opinion, you only need to have enough recurve to keep the string angle under 75-80* at full draw. Right now you will be way below that, probably closer to 35-45*. I'm just thinking outloud, but if you think of the area outside of the curve in terms of an atlatl, you get better performance if the tips come back and the string angle is closer to 75-80*. Then as the tip turns over it flips the arrow at a super quick speed. Kind of like the flip of the wrist of a baseball throw.
-
I trimmed off 2 inches on each tip...I'll be sure to post some new pictures tonight...

been workin on it quite abit...got it to about 3-4 in brace...its pulling 45 @ 15 right now....thats about what i want at 28 so ive still got some work ahead of me....but so far it looks good to me...i need to get it bending more in the fades and take some off the tips yet

Those are alot of work but you are putting a valiant effort into it.
Looks as if the right limb is a bit stiffer out toward the bend.
-
Well I got it to full brace and It looks surprisingly good at full brace (7.25") I have it tillered to about 20" right now and that is what the picture shows...its pulling about 43lbs at 20"....I would like some comments or pointers before I get it bending anymore...to me it looks alright but not perfect ( I think I see a hinge starting on the right limb about mid limb?? )....if everything looks good though...should I put sinew on it now and finish tillering to my desired weigh once the sinew is dry??

Looks good man. Get that bad boy sinewed already. What is the relaxed profile like? If it is taking a little set I would pull the set out before you put the sinew on. No need to get carried away with trying to add reflex on such a shorty, but I would pull it back to straight and hold it until the sinew is dry. Justin
-
it looks like it is bending too much right off the right fade
-
How much more draw can I get out of this?
-Ky
-
Tiller looks pretty good, a very small non bending area for the handle, and the string angles are nice. I would bet that with sinew you can the 28" you are after if you go carefull and slow on the tiller. What is the worst that can happen. >:D
-
Very good work. I really like it. How far are you going to try to get it to pull?
-
Josh, after the sinew is dried (which i found out is 3-4 months at least) Im gonna be trying for at leas 26"....but I would like to get 28"
-Ky
-
I keep coming back to your thread and I keep my fingers crossed for your bow!
Now starts to look as if the bow could make it!
-
Judging from your work so far, I really think its going to make a great bow. When are you going to get started on the sinew?
-
I have two layers on right now...Im going to put one more layer on in a week or so, and then Im planning on letting it dry until at least jan or feb...so Im looking at a good spring turkey bow..
-Ky
-
You can get 28" out of that bow but to do so you will have to make better use of the wood you have.
-
Marc do you mean getting the tips bending more? or deflexing the handle?
-Ky
-
I'd thin the tips down and get them bending more, if it were me.
-
I've been watching, there has been no need to comment since you have been getting great advice. But, If it was me, after adding the sinew and letting it cure, I'd scrape a little right at the beginning of the curves and to the bend. I think this would help open up the recurve and get it working a little more. And will probally give you a couple of more inches.
I'm looking forward to seeing it finished.
-
Guess we were typing at the same time,Dano. :)
-
Great minds think alike ;D
-
Great bow! I was just searching around on putting in recurve into a bow and stumbled onto this.
-
I second that. That is gorgeous looking bow. How did this ever turn out?
-
sure does look good to me!
-
Man, I had forgotten about how this one was building....Kyler? Still curing out the sinew? Can't wait to see this one finished, it should be quite the performer.
