Title: finish question
Post by: wvbowhntr on September 23, 2009, 10:08:53 pm
I am making a sinew backed osage with copperhead skins.  I know most people use tru oil, but can you use other finishes over the skins?  I have minwax wipe on poly would that work over snake skins?

Any finish you would use on a bow will work over skins. I've never used wipe on poly but I'm sure it would be fine to use. Be sure all of the scales are off of the skin before you add the finish.

Pat's right on about getting the scales off, any left under your poly finish will turn a grey milky color when it dries.
Sponge at it with a piece of masking tape works good, any tough ones flick off with your finger. I've used regular minwax poly applied with a sponge brush over snake skins, no problems.
