This is one of my latest bows. I made it for one of my friends who wanted just a cool looking bow that was fun to shoot. So I made this one out of a Mountain Maple sapling a little less then a inch and a half in diameter. It is 64" long and pulls 35# at 28". It's 1 1/4 at the fades to almost 7/8 up the limb then it tapers to 3/8. I left alot of cambium on the back to give it a camo effect and hopefully the cool look he wanted. The stave was one of the most crooked I have ever worked with and most of the time spent on this bow was steaming and straightening it. I have never had so much trouble getting good string alignment. Being so narrow it has taken some string follow, around an inch, I could have lengthened the bow to reduce it but he wanted it short. I gave it to him a while ago and he loved it, so i'm happy with it.

Yes Radius yew does grow in Montana but I never was able to find it. I haven't stopped looking though. I noticed that I didn't get it to full draw in the picture but it's too late to take more sorry guys.

Very fine job on a challenging piece of wood!

You are doing really good work with mountain maple. This wood is common around here and I have had some luck with it. I can't imagine it is growing where you are. Where are youi getting mountain maple?
ps:
bookmarked for Sept Self BOM

Thanks guys! Old Bow, Mountain maple doesn't grow around here I used to live in Kalispell and my dad still does so when I visit him I make sure to load up my car. I love Mountain Maple it's one of my favorite bow woods.

Nice bow!! Nice job on a stave with such character and crown! I haven't had much luck with high crown lately... :( :'( -josh

I have never had a problem with crown on a Mountain Maple stave it seems to be very strong in tension. Probably somewhat like vine maple, I've never used vm but I've heard it's similar.
