Title: American Bison Horn bow(new pics)
Post by: Timo on August 09, 2009, 10:41:47 pm
Perty much done with it. I have a few (legal) eagle feather replicas on order to complete this one,but will leave them off for the up coming season and put them on after wards.Very pleased so far with the out come of this lil bow. 53" 54# @ 26". American Bison horn belly, sinew backed, with bull snake skins and a paint job. Tom Ressler helped me a lot on this bow as it is my first one of this type. Alll the paint has different meanings but we won't go into that just yet. This is the same bow I did the buildalong on,so the full draw pic is on it.

Not real pleased with the way most of these pics turned out,so I will have my daughter do it up right at a later date.

This bow was a very fullfilling build. ;)

This is a great bow. I am glad you got it finished so quick. I have one going that is similar, but I'm making it with all stone tools. It has been going for a couple of years and still not done.  ??? Justin

It quit raining so me and the daughter went out and took a few more pics . I still don't think the pics do the bow the justice it deserves, but maybe I"m a bit partial ? ::)

Tom explained to me the the color red,is for the earth, black is for the mountains, and wht/yellow is for the sun. The four bands on the limb tips represent the 4 winds. There is suppose to be a lock of the bowyers hair on the upper limb tip, but my hair is too short for that,so I used some horse hair, which is also correct to use. many more things to all this, but more later. Here are a few more pics for those so impatient. ;)

We were playing around with some different angles and light, and we came up with this. The angle makes the tiller look a bit strong on the top, which it is a bit. ;) I'm not especially fond of the full draw tiller on this bow,but it just shoots so darn well I hated to change it. I can live with it.

Now you did it!! Much better photos, I like that full draw shot, TOO COOL!! How did you attach the horse hair? I think it was Mims that said something about getting hung up on perfect tiller and learning to just quit when the bow shoots well. You did good SON!!

That's pretty neat Timo. Not really what I expected to see from the tittle "Horn bow".....but cool none the less.
How does it perform? Any hand shock? I've never worked with horn but I've always read you need to have heavily reflexed limbs to make the horn belly store enough energy to overcome the added mass weight from the horn vs. a wood belly. Do you find this to be true?

This is a laminate (sinewed osage w horn belly), right? Some real craftsmanship here. You've got to really proud of it. Bookmarked under Laminates for BOM for August.

Thanks again all for the compliments.

Ryano, Tom Resslers artical a couple issues ago, sparked my interests again in these type of bows. Based off the lakota Indians and the bows they made and used to hunt the buffalo off horse back, short, quick pointing, and with plenty enough power to bury stone tipped arrows deep into the rib cage of the buffalo.  Worth many horses. Perty tough to make I figure, with stone tools?

The horn is perty thin maybe an 1/8" at the thickest place. So there isn't alot of extra mass weight.I figure the sinew adds about as much, and maybe it helps with storing energy? As for performance, I puposely added a good bit of deflex in the handle, to help out on the hand shock, there is very little if any bump to it. I've only shot cane arrows from it so far, and they seem plenty quick enough. I need to run some heavier arrows through it to see how they preform.  I will build more of these bows in the future, and plan on trying some different designs. More reflex in the outer limbs is next on the list.

The core wood is a slat of quarter sawn.I think the next one will from a small stave of some sort.

I definately ain't a bit afraid to shoot some stone tipped arrows with it this fall. ;D

OldBow, yes ,it is buffalo horn belly with sinew backing.

Timo:  beautiful workman ship!  I love the design and the paint!  How big were the buffalo horns you used?  I have access to lots of young  cow buffalo horns, but they may not have the diameter to use as you did!  Looks to be BOM for Aug!  Pokie

Plumb dandy Timo, and I really enjoyed the build along thread.

Wolf, those horns were 16" to the tip, but there is alot that is to thick to use near the tip, maybe 4"?

Tom told me that it is best to get the horns from bulls, and get them in a matched set.Not sure why,I guess for balance purposes?
