Title: Reflex Question/Buildalong
Post by: PeteDavis on June 23, 2009, 07:46:15 pm
I am building up a Rudder Bamboo/hickory kit. The core is thickness tapered and bends well. I used the form that he advises, the bow parts are 68" tip to tip. I blocked the 6" handle section out 1 1/2" from the face of the form. The tips are then blocked out 2". I assume that tip semi-recurve is what we call reflex.

I have temporarily wrapped all the parts, added the no split strip and gently pulled them into shape over the form. A dry run, but I'll let the parts sit there a few days and get used to those bends. I have only pulled 1 1/2" of reflex into the tips. Should I go for the whole 2" on a 68" bow? I have about 1/2" of unused travel left on my form.

I am going to glue up Friday with Urac.

I'll post when I get done.

More to the point:

Will 2" of reflex on a 68" bow make it noticeably harder to tiller than 1 1/2"?

just tiller it, you can reflex 3" and still get the thing tillered into shape...i've done that on a few good longbows and they came out just right!

The extra 1/2" will be an extra 1/2" after tillering. I usually go 3" with a Perry reflex. More than that is self defeating.

If you are going to cut it down to a 62" NTN bow you will be cutting alot of your reflex out when you do this so you might want to take that into your  starting amount of reflex..
