Well I finally gave in to the temptation and got a hold of some ipe after seeing all the fine bows KnightD and Robustus were making. Wow, this stuff is every bit as good as they said it is.....I'm very impressed. Here's my first atempt at a Highly deflexed reflexed little bow. It's 60"ntn and pulls a hair over 50#@28" it's as smooth as much longer bows I have shot and it's a rocket launcher to....

Man, that thing's pretty. :)
Looking forward to seeing more pictures!
Sean
-
Sure looks like a rocket launcher!
-
WOW!!!! :o
-
Thats a sweet looking bow.. ;)
-
That's really cool looking Ryan. I like how you put most of the grip on the back. I wanted to try that but was unsure how to get the bamboo around it smoothly. Great job :)
-
Really Decent Ryan.Phillip
-
Nice bow, Ryan. You're gonna love ipe. The only thing osage has on ipe is that it is osage. ;D But like osage, it doesn't take much ipe to make a hunting weight bow. 8)
-
Thanks guys, sorry about the crappy pictures. I'll post some better one's when its all finished. I was over to outbackbob's tonight and we were shooting it, man is it smooth and it hits hard to.
Jesse, The boo bent around this easy. I first glued the riser to the red oak center lam then I glued on the ipe belly over the handle riser and to the red oak core on my form. Then I glued the bamboo on the back and added more reflex on a torges style form with the blocks under the tips. The center lam is tapered as was the ipe before glue up. Call me if you want more detals.
-
Looks good Ryano, I was gonna talk a bit with ya about those washed out pics and the fact that we can't see that perty thang very well, but you already know I see? ;)
Bring on some better pics. How thick is your ipe lam?
-
Timo, the Ipe is 1/4" in the handle and tapers to 1/8" at the tips. It sure doesn't take much ipe to make a bow. Ya, the pictures do it no justice, you can't even see the laminations in the handle.
-
That is fantastic! Love that profile. Would love to see a build along, forms, etc.
-
nice bow Ryan!
boo backed ipé is one hell of a combi right? :)
Nick
-
Man that thing looks wild!!
Looking forward to more pics.

Like wow man I can really dig it.Ronnie 8)

Ryan, that looks like a missle launcher, for sure. I have a load of Ipe I need to get cranking on. I really like that wood.
-
I remember when folks didn't believe this stuff was real. ;) Not that long ago actually.. Glad to see you are having fun Ryan!, and your bow is looking very fast.
Rich
-
Looks like it's going to be a fine bow when you finish...although what I would expect. You keeping it for yourself? ;)
-
Thanks Guys. It does seem like a pretty good combo. I think I'll try a maple core on the next one, just for comparison. I never heard of anyone else using red oak as a core, it was just laying around so I figured I'd give it a Try.
-
That's a cool looking bow Ryan. I'm looking foward to the hero picture.
-
Just finished stitching up the grip on this bow. I'm very happy with the way it came out. I flipped up the tips a little with a heat gun, to give it that hybrid recurve/longbow look. The draw weight is a little lighter than I first posted, I had to adjust the tiller a little after shoot in because the bottom limb got a little weak on me. But it still shoots as fast as most of my heavier bows anyways. I'll try to take some good pictures to post tomorrow when I have good light. :)
Greg, I'm planning on making another one just like it, but with a maple core and then maybe one with a cherry core......we'll see.
You know I don't hold on to anything to long......lol.

Really a masterful production.
-
Very nice, Ryan. Your bows are always a pleasure to look at.
-
Wow, very nice. The bamboo looks really sharp the way you did it. Nice attention to detail on this bow.
-
Really nice profile!
Nice tips, nice finsh, over all a great bow!
-
outstanding! that thing is beautful!
-
WOW ! Great looking bow, looks like a fun one to shoot !
-
very nice Ryan. im impressed as usuall!
Phil
-
:o well done
-
Thanks a bunch fellas....I appreciate it. It is a fun bow to shoot. The trajectory out of it is what amassing at just 47#@28" it shoots the same arrows faster than my self bow I hunted with last year that's 50#@27" and its no slouch.
-
Dang Good Looking bow Ryan! That ipe is some amazing stuff ain't it.
I still can't believe the finish dried as fast as it did. ???
-
Looks real nice Ryan. Finish work looks top notch! Nice color combo. ;)
-
have you got a full draw anywhere? id sure like to see what its profile is...
Phil
-
Yep, Shannon. I used spray polyurethane and it was dry to the touch in 10 minutes.
Phil, I will post a full draw. I just need someone to take the picture for me, my camera's battery cover latch is broken and you have keep your finger on it so the timer funtion doesnt really work anymore. I need a new camera.
-
I'll trade you camera for the bow :P
-
Nice looking bow Ryan. Duct tape that camera. :-*
-

falti
-
Well the wife left on her business trip and I didn't get a full draw, I guess I'll try the duct tape tomorrow.
I'm gluing up another one of these right now with a maple core....I can't wait to see how it turns out.
-
It is very nice bow Ryan.
I really like the design you use, very smart indeed.
Especially I must say use in wood on back of core and core itself.
One thing I learn on ipe is, it so strong it gets very thin, and when it become same thickness as backing, the shear stress break even best glue job.
(can you tell it happen me multiple time? :)) So, a core will take this stress better than glue I believe.
Is the core tapered as well?
-
nice bow, youve done a good job. You wont believe this but thats the bow thats been in my mind for 6 months, exactly that design!!!I've made a few boo&ipe bows, and this profile was my conclusion as to how to get the best out of the materials. Obviously great minds think alike ::)
-
That's a great lookin' bow Ryan.I'm gonna have to break down and try that ipe. God Bless
-
Great looking bow Ryan
-
Beautiful bow Ryan, turned out really nice! :)
-
Ryan, that turned out killer. Bet the fletches leave a smoke trail, that thing looks fast sitting still...:)
-
Well I been waiting for the trophy shot, but what the hey. It looks swell Ryan. There are some other tropical hardwoods that do great, massa-sumbin-r-nuther is one I liked. And there's an off green colored one, starts with a C. Joe Dawn did a big rash of them, and Wingnut too, a few years back wehn the movie (bbo) was so popular. As with most woods, the specimen matters too. Have seen some less than stellar ipe, but most is perty good.
-
Thanks everyone. I think it came out pretty good for a first atempt at this design /wood. Here's a full draw shot.

Ryan, thats a nice looking bow, man I wish we had IPE around here, I looked on ebay but it seems expensive to me.
You did a nice job on the handle too.
VB
-
Very nice arc Ryan.
VB, Actually Ipe is rather inexpensive and its those who pay too much for it then put it on E-bay which make it seem that way..you gotta pm

Very nice ! Looks like an almost dead knock off design of a Ron LaClair "Shrew" or is it just me ? Lol !! ;D
-
Thanks for the comments guys.
Never seen a "Shrew" but there are loads of fiberglass bows out there using this Hybrid recurve/longbow design. I just haven't seen many made with natural materials yet. I was inspired to build one like this after I saw a bow that James Parker AKA "Robustus" made. Thanks for the inspiration James ! ;D
-
Another beauty, Ryano! Bet she sends an arrow screaming too.... ;)
-
wow im probably going to use ipe for my next bow after seeing this one :D, where can i find a good wood plank of ipe on the net? i dont have a lumber yard anywhere close to my house.
