I could kick myself in the butt for not looking at some of my authentic Dovetails before I notched this one. >:( The notches should have been a little more horizontal and would have actually been easier to make.
Oh well, I'm happy with how it turned out anyway. It's the biggest piece I've made so far. I used as much percussion as I dared, but still had to resort to a good bit of pressere to clean it up and get it to look like anything.
And for anyone wanting to permanently sign your work, a little electric engraver works pretty good. You just have to go slow and let it barely touch the rock. ;) One you get it signed, a dab of wax makes it all but invisible.

Terrific piece!

That's a great looking point, just call it something else....:)
-
Nothing wrong with that point. You should see some of mine, most of mine look terrible next to yours and I have been knapping for years.
-
nice looking point ! the least you could do was to break it into about three pieces ,like i do all the time, then you could have three bird points ;D
-
Seeing as ya screwed it up just send it up to me and I promise not to tell anyone ;) :D
Great point Shannon :)
-
Very nice Shannon! You can call it what ya want, the base favors a Hopewell, but there were variances of dovetails, just like most all other point types. Ya done good son.
Texas material?
-
Thank Ya'll :)
Barry, don't give me that ::) I know what you can do ;)
Dana, you'll get yours. I just need to get my hands on some more rock. Right now I'm down to one more piece. :(
Your right about the different variations Tim. I hadn't even thought about the Hopewells though. You're right again, it does kinda look like one. That, or a Kirk corner notched. It's Georgetown chert, I wish I had a ton of it!
I been doing a little research and have found out that Sonora flint comes from a couple counties west of me. I plan to do a little driving and see if I can come up with anything. It would be nice if I could, it's really nice looking rock.

Nice point, Shannon. Down here it would be called a Culbreath.
-
that looks sweet man. what did you engrave that with? I would love to make somthing that pretty. back to the rock pile for me.
-
Shannon- you are knocking out a BUNCH of real beautiful points. Nice job on that one as well as the others. Keep 'em coming.
-
That is a really nice point! Sonora the same or similar as Indiana hornstone?

Redwasp, I just used a little cheap engraver.
Thanks Rick ;D
Tracy, I believe it's different. Most all the points I've seen made from it are blue, grey, brown and sorta reddish mottled. It's very glossy and about all of it has tiny little air pockets in it. I may never find any of it, but I'm gonna try.
