59" ntn, a llittle under 1 3/8" wide at the handle tapering to 7/16" pin nocks. dark green and brown rit dye on the tips, and dark green on the limbs. 7 coats of my home made "tru-oil" and some wax over top. jute twine on the handle. it actually gained some weight from when i finished the tillering. ive been keeping it in the hot box while i put the finish on, so i think it dryed out some more. it came out at 45#@27", and it throws my new cane arrows pretty well. this was a project that was started over a year ago. inspired by Gordons hazlenut buildallong. i really like this style of bow, its surprisingly fast for the weight. I made this bow to use with my "indian" style buckskin hunting shirt...whenever i get that done... :D

This is without a doubt the best looking hick bow I've ever seen. That home brew tru-oil did the trick. Great looking bow.!!!!! Congratulations!!!!

You know, D bows are just about my favorite type bow. Great lookin' bow. You did a great job!
-
Well done on this one. Looks great.
-
Thanks Guys! ive been kinda out of the loop for quite a while, so i havnt been posting or tillering much. this bow has deffinately gotten me back into it.
Mike, yes thoes are art. sinew wraps. the bow developed some chryssals early on at a weak spot cause it was a tad too wet, so i epoxied an osage slat ive the spot, and wrapped the works with art. sinew. then coated the whole area with epoxy. i fixed the tiller so it shouldnt give me any problems.
the home made truoil did work great, but ive got to get something to put in it to speed up the drying. it took about 3 days between coats. and that was in my drying box!

What was the final make up of the oil you came up with?

thanks fellas. it means alot commin from you guys!
Aosda, i started out going by the MSDS proportions, but it was a bit too thiin. so i tinkered with it a bit and ended up with about 30% mineral spirits, 50% toung oil, and about 20% boiled linseed oil. i also added a couple of drops of special walnut stain to it, which gives it just enough color. like i said, im going to be getting soem Japan dryer to put in it. this should finish the blend as far as im concered. if your gonna make your own, make sure you try it on some scrap wood first, till you get the effect you want.

Looks very american indian. Thats a long arrow.

Great tiller! Awesome bow. How did that tiller give you chrysals? Jawge
-
I really like the coloring of it and the profile. I've made a few D's but haven't given'em any reflex. What did you do for this one? The 45 lb. pull weight is really growing on me for accuracy. Anyway, appreciate your sharing.

You scored on your new bow being primitive and very well tillered. A great candidate for May Self BOM.
-
thanks all!
Dave, the arrow has a hardwood foreshaft that i havnt had a chance to cut down and put a point on yet, so it will be shorter. not much, but shorter. as it is now, it flys strait and pretty flat, so ill cut off a bit, then mount a field point on and test it, then repeat untill it flies good again.
Jawge, thanks, that means alot coming from you! the chrysals came after i did the second heat treating. it was weak in thoes 2 spots just outside the handle. being out of the game for so long, i wasnt paying enough attention when i got it back on the tree. i also think i let it re-hidrate too long. oh well, when i make mistakes like this, it helps me learn how to fix em.
Parnell, thanks, i like that coloring too, when you hold it just right it looks green, but then you turn it a little it looks more grey. as for the reflex, when i did the initial heat treating (i usually do 3), i induced about 3 inches of reflex, which it kept about 2 inches. then i tillered it out to about 10" and flipped the tips with dry heat. i did it from the side like Manny suggests, and it didnt split or check on the belly. the tips do need to be a bit thicker so they will hold the reflex. the way i do it is to clamp the tip on the caul, and add a few c-clamps at the handle for weight. then slowly heat the tips from the sides.
Thanks Don, its good to be back!

Very nicely done Phil, love the full draw on a D bow :)

thanks Dana! :D

Nice job, Phil. Good job overcoming the problems. I love the care you took with the nocks. Excellent artistry, great tiller. Nice bow in all respects. Well done.

Phil, thanks for the info. I haven't used tru oil yet, I might try the linseed/beeswax mix mentioned in another post. I'll have to dig around and see if I have any of the ingredients you used. If not, it'd be cheaper for me to buy tru oil for now. Let us know how the Japan dryer works out.

very nice bow phil, i also love those d bows! excellent finish and coloring.
did you build up the handle with leather or anything else?
thomas

Fits in the woods well. Nice tiller!
-
Thanks Dan, i apreciate it!
Travis, you're gonna like tru-oil. but it works better for me to put it on with a rag, rather than my finger. give it a try anyhow. ill let you all know how the finish works when i get the dryer in it.
Thanks Thomas! i used a couple pieces of tooling leather under the handle, and on the back of it.
Thanks Timo!
