Got this stave from DCM a couple year ago @ mojam. Looked perty good in the log, but after splitting and taking off her clothes,I found that she had some nice curves and unusual grain. The limbs not only curve side to side but kinda roll back and forth,Had a lot of deflex in the handle so I left it and recurved the outer limbs. I had a hard time seeing the tiller on this one due to the twist. I guess it looks right?63" 45# @ 28".
I V spliced some bacote in the tips and over layed them with horn. The strike plate is also bacote. I tried the "Manny stance" on the hero shot.........Sorry Manny but it's still a bit cool here for flip flops! ;D

Oh that is sweet Timo. You definitely got my attention with that one, The tips look great and I love the profile and all the twist, curves, dips and dives are the icing on the cake. ;) Congratulations on an exceptional bow. Keenan
-
Flip flops might help your full draw picture, but that's juss me ;D
Georgeous bow buddy, I can see why this stave caused the delay.
-
A snakey D/R... WOW!!! That is truly an amazing bow. Very well done. Your tiller looks bang on to me.
-
Beautiful job. I really like the tips. What type of glue/epoxy did you use for the splice? And it looks like you did the splice during rough out, correct? The tiller looks good to me, the only thing I see is an extended flat spot on the lower fade, and if you look at the full draw pic, it looks like it might hinge. Just my thought, could be the character of the wood. Excellent work.

Thanks Keenan,Dano, and ADB
Aosda,Thanks for the kind words,I use gel ca glue, I rekon bout any glue would work. Cleaned the bacote well.I think I had it tillered to about 24" when I added the tips. Did the v splice first, then figured it wouldn't hold since all the pressure would be on the glue joint,so I added the horn over. Seems to be holding fine.
As for what looks like a hinge? It's been like that from the start. The stave rolls to one side at that point, Your're actually seeing the middle of the limb in that pic. The top limb does the same thing just opposite.I'll try to get some reverse pics later,(if it quits raining). ;D I normally don't tiller bows such as this very well.I learned over 15 yrs to strive for that perfect arc, and these r/d bows just screw with my mind. I need to learn it better though, cause this bow is a real pleasure to shoot. the light weight helps with that to I figure? ;)
Thanks again.

Seeing some of your past work, I figured it was my eyes and the stave tricking me. But figured I'd let ya know. Again great job.
-

Excellent bow and #1 for May Self Bow of the Month!

Awsemo Timo. I don't think Winged Elm is very prevalent in PA.
Dave
-
Love the looks of this bow. Good job.
-
Cool little bow there Timo, I like when people think outside the box, nice one on the tips.
....You know you're from the mainland when you call them, Flip Flops ;D ;D ;)
-
Manny, I figure if the term "flip flop" was good enough for Jimmy Buffet, then it's good enough for me? ;)
What the heck do you islanders call them?
Thanks for the kudos,all.
-
Slippers Timo,...SLIPPERS ;D ;D
-
I'm glad to see no one said "Thongs"
-
Beautiful bow! Like the shape- heck, I like evreything about that bow. Between you and Manny, all these nice R/D bows make me feel like I need to get off my butt and finish one up :D! All this great inspiration- geeze!
-

-
All that osage you got Timo, and you make an Elm bow-Very cool ;D Looks great and that's some wild looking grain on the back as well. I really like that Winged Elm and made a D bow from a slender stick David gave me..Creative overlays as well.

Thats a beauty

Timo that is a very cool bow and looks like it was quite a challenge. I don't hae the experience or the guts to work something like that just yet but maybe someday. I think your curves are excellent all the way around. Danny
-
Great lookin weapon Timo! I call em flip-flops too ;D.
-
Awesome bow, Timo. Jawge
-
:)
-
Sidewinder, the only way to gain experience is to get your feet wet. just remove everything that won't bend right. ;) ;D
Thanks George, and cowboy.
George, did you ever get a finish on that osage bow?
-
You worked your majic again Timo. With that tiller profile it should make good cast for it's weight.
You done inspired me bud. And it looks like I got a day to work.
-
Very nice, Timo. I can only imagine how difficult it must be to tiller an RD with that kind of character.
-
Fine looking stick there, Tim. You did a great job getting that tiller from that piece of wood. Like those spliced tips, too.
-
Thanks Mims, and thanks again for the wood....I think? ;D Interesting piece this one was. Almost seemed to be spalted in that upper limb. really nice colors going on with it. No dye job on this one.Even cut in a shallow shelf.I figured Ryano would be proud? ;D
Thanks Bear, and yes it was a "bear" to tiller.
Thanks Hillbilly, Had the idear to do some tips like that for a long time, just never could muster up the courage. Got several other thoughts on tips, but that will have to wait till next bow builidng season as right now I'm getting covered in work.
-
Love it Tim :) Picked a couple of winged elm staves up at the classic(plus a few others ;)) looking forward to trying it out
-
awesome bow! i like those wings.
(btw we also call them flip flops)
-
I thought I recognized those big pieces in your truck Dana. It's good you rescued them from Shannon. He'd swore they weren't going back to Kaintuck with him.
I picked up a piece off of him as well.
It's a crying shame what these rendevous do to the price of bow wood, well unless you is wood po and in the market. I say premium osage staves for $10. Heck, Shannon had a premium, I'm mean straight as a string, HHB that was two bows wide at least and he said fellars was trying to bargain him off of $10 for it.
Timo I'm fixing to build a tri lam with a full riser mild r/d bow, ala the Wingnut paradigm. See if I can get near widder behavoir from it. Trying to figure out how add mass weigth to the riser, up to and including a piece of rebar....
A boy in the neighborhood cut a nice pignut, prolly 20" on the butt. I could not help myself, and to stop and look yestiddy. Called them and left a message I wanted a section but ain't heard back. Darn shame to see it reduced to fire wood.
I need more bow wood like I need another hole in the head.
-
David I do believe I also ended up with the HHB ;D Split it down the middle for 2 staves :)
-
Well at least you live up to your reputation. LOL! Good. Glad it went to somebody who can appretiate it. Lots of folks just don't realize what goes into fetchin' such up outa the booga woods.
-
Nice bow Timo. We don't have winged elm around here, just piss elm and slipery elm. I am proud of you for trying something new. Let us all know if it blows to pieces on you like some people seem to think they will.... ::) ;D
-
Very nice bow Tim. Elm is one of the best bows woods I have available locally and I make use of it quite often
-
Nice work Timo, as always 8) got me inspired to turn the lights back on in the shop.
JD

Thanks Dana, and good luck with your w/elm,(smells good when ya heat it up) ;D
Thanks Ryano, yes I play with different woods from time to time, but I always go back to my osage. Been thinking on another wood that ain't used much lately, but that will have to wait until winter.
Thanks Marc, I appreciate it. Bout time for you to post up another one ain't it? ;)
Thanks JD! were you been hiding boy? Been chasing them wild women I rekon? ;) You going to the jam?
Thanks Pappy, I'll get down there to shake your hand next year.
