Title: What was I thinkin?
Post by: Timo on April 11, 2009, 10:46:53 pm
Worked up a bunch of slats today...alll day! This is the main stack of 3 footers.I also have a stack of 25 that are full length. I'll loose some of these during final cull, after they are dried, not sure how much. I had a perty critical eye while I was roughing them out, so that number should be low. Still have a lot of boards left to do....I think I'll wait a while.  :-\

This is the first time I have worked up my own. It is a terrible bunch of work, not to mention saw blades, electricity,Dust containment....Learned a bunch though. I was amazed at how much weight difference there were between slats!

That looks like a lot of work.  That would've taken me months, I don't have power tools.  What kind of wood is it?

George, I never tire from looking at finished work.:)

Madcow, I got off the liquid pain killers long ago.I now rely on ibuprof. ;)

Bullitt,5 hrs with me and you would need some of madcows relaxers.:)

Koan, yes it is very hard on tools. This is still fairly green wood, so it really gums up the blades.

Aosda,Yellow gold baby! "Osage"!  O:)

Good one Jesse!

Tim, Work like this makes one appreciate mowing the lawn.. I doubt you will have to cut osage for the rest of this decade! ;D A fine looking stack indeed! ;)

Drano...I meanDano..(soory my bad):) good to see you among the living still. Hows the fishing?

Jesse, LOL

Rich,I hate to mow the moles...grass I mean...Much rather do this kinda stuff.

Gordon, If all those where good, there is 90 some bows worth there. Still more to do,but need another full day to work on them.Hate to do a little here and there.Gotta set tools stations up and need them for other things.

There is alot of waste to this process.More so than some might be able to take,as I hate to throw any osage away.but one needs to be a bit thick skinned when he's working it out to diminsions. Pin knots are the problem of course.I try to leave any knots near the ends of the slats. And only back to belly knots pass my criteria. Side pins spell disaster.

Now I just need a good source for some pole bamboo.?Mike Westvang  form Dryad bows, gets some very good stuff from some unknown supplier, but his lips are tighter than a good still mouthed coon hound. :)

Like they say, "a bad day of fishing beats any day at work".  You know I bet ol wingnut would trade ya some bamboo for a few sticks of hedge. ;)

Them look like mighty generous thickness, 3/4"?

Bandsaw would save you some kerf, but one to do resaw that wide on osage well would need to be perty good size.

Seems like there'd be a happy medium, between gummy wet and so dry as to be too hard.  Personally, I don't find osage to be that much harder some whitewoods, say hickory or post oak as far as machining.  There's some oaks so dense and hard you's swear it was made outa rock.

Real fine job Timo.

Trade ya weekends, although wife did a fair measure of the real work.  Got my 'mater patch broke and covered w/ black plastic as well.  Needed to get back to work so I could rest.  LOL

Cowboy, there is some bamboo poles that are grown in or near tonkin bay.I have heard from very good sources that it is some of,if not the best you can get? Can't seem to find the source though. Any Ideas?

Wouldn't mind to try some of the stuff you got there. Looks like a good haul.

Tim, Japp Kopendreyer(?) is now living in South GA somewhere and has started growing bamboos of all(archery) types. He may know(or have) what you are talking about. Also, in Savannah or at least Chatham Co, GA. there is an old USDA research station, The bamboo farm, that has all types of bamboos. You might search them out for a source.
