The knot. It split right down the middle of the knot.

It sure scared the crap out of me when it blew !
Just thought i would share one of my failures with everyone. Already have another in the works. ;D

It's fun when they blow, ain't it John! :o ::) Looks like the knot was the problem and from there it went into the wood. Was it hinged in that area?
-
Sorry to hear that. I have several staves right now from hickory with knots. I was wondering if I should even bother with them.
-
Pat, I don't think it was hinged. If you look at the belly pic, there is a gray line running down it. It had a very pithy wood in it, that i could could scrape out. It was about an 1/8" deep. I think this had something to do with the failure. Just seems wierd that it split the knot in half. Must of been the week point ?
Bigcountry, I would work you'r stave and not let the knots bother you :D You never know till you try ;D

I have made plenty of hickory bows with knots in them. If the knots are sound, they are usually not a problem. If the knot id doughty I will saturate it with super glue first before working the stave. If the knot is read bad, I will remove as much of it as I can then super glue it. Sometimes, removing the knot all together will eliminate the possibility of it causing failure.
