Title: First self bow
Post by: HFD60 on March 30, 2009, 07:49:54 pm
here's my first self bow that I got to build with the help (much appreciated  ;D ) of Knightd, when I showed up at Nugget's get together in N.C. with no bow. It's white elm with lacewood tips, buckskin handle with an antler shelf. hope you all like it.....

it's 64" tip-tip... I stained the bow with 1 coat of stain, then hand painted the stripes with India ink, then applied 2 more coats of stain. followed by 3 coats of poly, steelwooling between, then 2 coats of paste wax

Great job on that one. I like the camo on the back. Might have to try that. David is a good guy to learn from. He's helped me out over the phone. Nothing like learning from someone that knows what they're doing.

Hawk stole my comment!  ;D Definitely doesn't look like a first bow...more like one from an accomplished bowyer to me! Very nice all around, and great detail to attention on the finish work and grip! ;)

Howdy Mr. HFD,

Hay!!  That's a mighty fine weapon you got there!

I especially like that leather handle n' arrow rest.  The drawn-on lines also add to the bow - makes it faster  ;).  And, the curved limbs look really good also.

One question / comment...  At the edge of the back of the bow, (where the back meets the sides), it appears to have a fairly sharp edge.  Most bows I've seen tend to have more rounded edges.  I'm wondering why y'all decided to leave that edge rather sharp?  Not that it looks bad, it looks really nice - unique.  But, I think some people would worry about a splinter popping up on that edge.

Again, really nice bow and Congratulations,
Canoe

Thanks Canoe....To tell the truth I didn't even think about it poping a splinter being my first bow and all, however it's really not as sharp of an edge as it looks in the pic. It does have some radius to it. I'll remember that for the next one though  ;) And the strips made it much faster, just like racing strips on a car  ::)  ;D

Don't know how I missed this one...Sweet job! Can we see a better full draw and a unbraced picture? Does it follow the string at all ?
