Title: are these knappable
Post by: DustinDees on March 25, 2009, 01:55:36 pm
my work is built on old riverbed as is most of the town. a few days ago i started digging rocks up before work in an empty lot next to the parking lot. started banging rocks together and a cart pusher said "hey man if you need a lighter, all you got to do is ask" lmao. anyway i got a rather ugly geode (gave it away, all fractured quartz) and this stuff. is any of this knappable? sure its fun knocking sharp pieces of rock off these, but can i make them into points?
p.s. all of the broken pieces are where i chipped the rock, i know some doesnt look that way.
thank you
Dustin D

My opinion... take it for what its worth.

knappable to make a nicely finished arrow head - nope. no concoidial fracture.
but knappable to make a tool or scraper yes.

Keep banging them together. you'll find one and have some fun.

That's some rough looking rock. I agree with Wade. That rock will work with wooden billets, and you can make some bigger points/axes, etc. but you're probably not going to get anything refined looking out of it.

thank you guys for the reply. after i posted this i went to moms farmhouse and found some (what i believe to be) chert. got similar smaller stones to chip properly. but this sucker is tough. will get more of it when i have more time to play in the hills.

Like Wade and Steve said, naw, it looks like Niess. A silicified slate.

Hey Look! He's just gotten the basics right there. All those spalls look like perfect reproductions of Olduwan tools. Oldivai would be proud of him!!!  ;D

That second rock looks like silicified limestone.  I have some that looks like that.
