Title: Blowin Folgers :(
Post by: Timo on March 04, 2009, 10:52:15 pm
My coffee tree stave blew tonight. There was a knot that I was worried about, and that is were it let go.The stave was a small sapling and probly not a good representative of the species, but I gotta tell ya, this wood is tough. The first pic shows the blow, and the second pic shows how much pressure it would still take.I had to bend it almost double to get it to break the rest of the way. Then it just splintered like hickory/elm. Had to twist it alot to get it apart.

This piece had alot of problems in it,I cut it just to see what I thought of the wood.Friday I will cut some bigger, clearer stuff and see what happens.I think this wood holds some good promise.(least I know how well it breaks):)

Well I give you props for trying Timo, and I hope you get a big time shooter next time. I've read of bows being made from this tree, and we have a few in town.
I was kinda wondering how you were going to dye it.
Roger, you got one from Mudd, that could have historical implications ;D Good to see you here.

Rich

That's a shame Tim.  Sounds like coffee tree should make a good bow. At least when it blows it only folds. Ever blow an ERC bow before? :o

To bad Tim,but we all know it happens, back to the drawing board. From the looks of what is left
I would think it should make a good bow if you can get a clean piece. :)

Roger, How is Mudd? You hear from him much?

Rich, I've heard of bows being made from this tree, but seems no one can show me one?

Pat, Never an ERC, but I did wake up the chickens when I  blew a yew up last week....WOW!

Pappy, I think this is a very good wood. We will see.

Dana, I read about your alder....It happens. And as for my drawing board? Well I gotta get rid of theose crayons..:)

If a person never breaks one, they're probably not making many or pushing the envelope. Sorry it broke, but looking forward to future attempts. :)

Timo, sorry to see the misfortune. I've wanted to try coffee tree myself but haven't.
Good luck with your other staves, we hope to see some pics of the finished product soon.
