Title: Ok I am hooked
Post by: fred45 on February 09, 2009, 01:11:16 pm
well I was burning some stuff yesterday and spotted a 4" oak, I cut it down and split it. iI covered the ends in plastic bags and tied it to a 2x4. In 2-3 weeks I am going to cut away anything that is not a bow!!!

Yep, it's addictive. You can also coat the ends with cheap glue or spray shellac. Getting the bark off if you haven't already will help it dry faster, too.

thanks, I just got permission to rummage through some locust and walnut trees cut down after the ice storm. if I get a few staves should I peel the bark and seal the whole stick, or leave the bark and seal the ends? how long can I store them before I let loose the bow inside?

I would peel the bark and seal the back. Or with the locust, you can take the bark and sapwood both off and seal the back (locust checks easily). You can start roughing one out soon, and it will dry pretty quickly.
