Title: What's the purpose?

Does anyone know what the purpose is behind leaving the first few strands of feather longer at the start of fletching on an arrow, as opposed to trimming the rest of the feather down?

What Dana said, plus it's a good way to mark the cock feather if all your feathers are the same color.
