Title: hick board bow
Post by: sailordad on January 18, 2009, 07:53:58 pm
well this is another one i am working on now, lets see that makes 5 going at once now     wheeewwww

well this is nothing fancy by any means (yet),its just a hick board that had a bow hiding inside it.actually it also has a brother waiting his turn also.
both of which are goinf to someone i feel is deserving of such. O:)

i probably wont finish either of them completly. i will probably get it tillered and just glue on the handle and tip overlays and let him finish them and put
whatever finish on that he chooses.
just though i would post a pic to see whats what and what needs fixing, please as always any input is greatly appreciated.

thats pulling about 18 inches, dont know how much weight havent put it on a scale yet.
i think the tiller is looking decent

once again thanks for looking

hey Tim, lookin' good so far.  I really don't think it hurts to have several things going at once.  Maybe its a "guy thing"......you know, trim out the bathroom except for that one piece by the door.......or weed all the flower beds except that part by the driveway......if you ALMOST finish those chores it is like job security, i figure.

So, start a bunch of bows, work them when you can and your depth of experience will grow faster than if you make one at a time, start to finish.

Looks pretty good Tim. Your bottom limb is bending more than the top.  ;)
The thing I like about having more than one project going at a time is that if you start to feel like you are rushing a project or are feeling frustrated, you can switch to another.

Your bow is coming along nicely, Tim.           If I only had one thing going on I'd spend most of my time trying to find it. With multiples all I have to do is turn around and there is another unfinished project.  ;D

That actually looks pretty darn good, Tim. When you said you were adding  a handle did you mean handle covering because it has a handle. Jawge

Well, I ask because it's best to do that before you start bending wood making then handle more likely to pop off. No way! Bending wood has a memory but so does a missus. Now don't you go getting me in trouble. :) Jawge

george

i never even thought of that, too much running thru the old noodle lately.
i dont feel any bend in the handle section as of yet. think i would be safe using 2 ton epoxy to hold on the "riser" of leopard wood on this one?
the other one i will glue on the zebra wood right away.
thanks for the input everyone.

Hey Sailordad,

that looks like a good start on that hickory bow  ;)   i like it...  looks real good....
Wow!!!   you say you got five going at once...   thats good idea... i like how you explained it,  that if you got more projects at once,  and you get them done in stages,  than by the time you finish em you would have learned more,  and have gotten more experience in a shorter time, than if you just do one at a time... it makes a lot of sense... might have to...  huuuhhh... use that theorie my self...  ;)

ok so its beenawhile since ive shown pics of this one
so heres ans update.
i did glue on a piece of zebra wood for a riser, camo cotton cloth backing has been glued on also, tillered out to 26 inches and about 45 lbs.
couple more inches and its done. so from this point on its just tillering with sand paper.
did a little work on the nocks tonight, nothing fancy ther just shaped them,no overlays or any thing.hey these are for young adultsa to use running thru the
woods, fancy stuff just means theyll get pissed when they damage the tips etc.

i know the lower limb looks like its bending more, but i think thats cause the wife was standing when she took the pic and i was kneeling and i think thats giving that illusion
the eliptical shape shows tiller looks pretty even i think
any how heres a pic of the tiller let me know what ya think  ;D

thanks for the comments gentelmen ;D

i did tell the wife what ya'all thought of her wall ;)

you guys are lucky cause she said she didnt like it anymore either and wants to repaint it.tonight she even said she now knows what color.
more of a darker mustard yellow,or as she said "tannish yellow" cause it more of a richer color.

thanks guys  i appreciate the comments.

and i know it sounds like a honey do,but when it comes to painting this honey dont.thats her thing, and she does it all by herself too i just stay out of the way ;D

now to answer a couple of qustions.

jesses: i checked it last at 26" and it was about 53#,did a little sanding and have it pulling to 29" right now but havent put it back on the scale yet.
i plan on shooting this one in next week and rechecking tiller, and then i will check final weight and let ya know :)

johnk:that sucker is 72" tip to tip,i kept it long as it needs a 28" draw and trying to kep the weight up near the 50# mark.its going to be used by young adults and ya never know how much abuse they are going to put it thru,so i figured a l little longer should last a little longer ;D

akapk:ya this one should be a good bow, hope its brother turns out this well. i will only get to put a hundred or 2  arrows thru it,but y i think i'll like shooting it.

one of these days i might just have to keep a bow for myself.just started another hick stave and an iron wood stave maybe one of these will be a keeper.

                                                                          peace,
