I would say look around your local area and you'll probably find someone that has more experience than you currently have, then just ask for help. I've found the flintknapping community to be very helpful. Like you I'm just starting and I learned more in one lesson from a local gent than I had from many videos and books. Good luck. Mike

Dana and Mike are right. Get you some basic tools and get with someone to give ya some pointers if you can. I would reccomend starting with the smallest of the spalls you have there and learn percussion. If you could find some free glass to work before bashing all that nice obs I would highly reccomend that first ;D.

i've practiced a little with beer bottle bottoms, smashed more fingers than stones. nice pieces. What does spalls mean though? and why not thin them out by hand instead of using machines? I just like the older ways I guess. Takes more work in all skills but the satifaction is soooooo worth it.

less waste

to some the rock or obsidian is too hard to get to waste any trying to get a decent spall from the hunk

Nice points.  As long as you have no aversion to using copper, get a piece of 1/2 inch tubing and heat and flatten one end.  That will give you a long pressure flaker to really dress up your edges.  I've found I do better detailed pressure flaking on my leg pad than in the palm of my hand.

If you want to stay "abo", you can grind a scapula bone to a long sharp edge and do the same thing.

Thanks  for the Tip Mike Wondered where ya were,  Still use the spoke shave. I think I traded you that for a  BB.
I tried the leg pad for pressure flaking its easier for me to but my Knapping is terrible but I figured since the nice folks  gave me the stone ,I might as well try to make something, tell ya the truth with the pretty stone I would rather send it to someone and have them make me a point so I can be really impressed. I would even give them some of the obsid I have, not the red stuff thats what I want made into Points for my Collection.

Nice point AKAPK, that may be midnight lace. Looks like you have all the essential tools there on the table or if those are your friends tools then you have someone to show you the basics - good deal :). Now for the tonnage ::) ;D.

    akapk,
ok so i am just trying to get  started with knapping.
i have a ishi stick and pressure flaker coming from a trade i made.
but i have been wanting to start on making a couple more tools such as a bopper.
you said you made all of yours, could i bother you for some directions then on how do this and other essential tools that i may need.
ya can pm me if you dont want to fill your thread up with the details of that.

                                                                 peace,
                                                                      tim

I don't mind Filling the thread with Helpful advice, I just hope the servers don't mind me.
Any way sure you can go to the Hardware store and buy Copper end caps, they usually come in 1 inch  1/2" and bigger. The caps will be flat so ya need to round them by Hammering. the caps don't last long so sometime when I'm short on cash I'll pound out a round of copper plate wich I sqave for some reason, use a ball ping and the hole in the Andvil is for that. I round the tip of a dowel the size of the bopper head.
if ya  want to use a hammer stones for the spalling. Since I'm still a beginner at this I used granite For hammestones about 4" to 1/1/2 in from around town in the whatya call them rock beds around stores I don't think they will mind a stone or 2 missing.
fot the pressure flakers ya can use copper nail or if ya can't find those one can use copper rod wichever is easier to find. can't have the copper to far out from yhe end of the holder or it will bend.
Here is a couple pics on web shots showing some of my tools and my Andvil with its helpers?
if ya click on the web shots photo once and then again ya get a bigger image. hope this helps.PK

pk thank you.

seems simple enough,so then there is no weight behind the cap of the bopper?
i suppose a little lead woudnt hurt anything .

thanks again

                                                               peace,
