Well this bow started with a great Christmas gift from Dana last year. He sent me a nice hard maple stave. Thanks Dana.
The stave sat around until the TN. classic and I brought it along to work on.
Pappy helped me lay it out and even cut the shape on his bandsaw. I was going to tiller it out there but lost my drive after news my dog in the pic bellow got hit by a car and died while I was at the classic.
Then summer came and I was too busy to work it but little by little It started turning into a bow. I had to do a lot of heat adjusting and tempered the belly as well.
I posted lots of pictures and got great advice from all of you on the message board so I give you all credit as well Thanks.
Ok Here it is 66"ntn 1 3/4 wide till mid limb then tapers to 1/2" tips pulls 54#@28" and holds reflex when unstrung. Shoots hard and fast. Im a fan of maple after this one. Its a fun wood to work. dyed with rit mixed with acetone. sealed with spar urethane. Thanks for looking Jesse

Great looking bow.
-
Now, THAT'S A PRETTY BOW!! Looks nice just sitting there and the full draw pics make my pulse pick up a couple of beats. I love the knocks, very nice. Dang funny looking grass......here in Louisiana it's green, not white.
Keep up the good work. piper
-
Impressive! Well done dude!
-
Jesse ya done that stave proud, she really came out nice, tiller is as nice as I've ever seen, very well done on the stain and finish.
Then to top it off ya took great pictures :) I will get some more of that Yooperwood to ya when I come down yer way for surgery.
-
OUTSTANDING! That's a fine looking bow, Jesse. Tiller looks dead on and that is a cool looking dye job. Color matches the quiver. ;)
-
Howdy Jesse,
As others have stated, you turned a darn good stave into a darn good bow - be proud!
So, can you talk a little more about the stain job on that bow? Rit dye and Acetone? Did you simply substitute acetone for the water on the directions off the box of Rit? Or, did you use less acetone, or...?
Thank for the info, and happy holidays,
Canoe
-
Thanks for the great remarks guys.
Dana-- Thanks again for the wood stop by anytime with more ;)
Piper I still gotta get up and say hi to your buddy in iron river
Eddie I thought you would notice the quiver. YoU made it. I use it all the time
conoe I was looking for alcohol which I normally use but couldnt find any so I used acetone. I didnt read the pack or measure just made a paste and brushed it on. its cocoa brown rit powder.
-
Beautiful bow man. Really lovely. Maple is dang nice wood to work with and it's easy on the eyes when you're at the "tiller". Dave
-
Thanks Dave. First time I played around with maple for a bow but not the last. No nasty smelling dust like the ipe Ive been using. When I cooked the belly it smelled good enough to eat ;D
-
Great looking bow! Well done. Jawge
-
very nice bow Jesse. i really like the finish. I'll have to try that on my next bow. what exactly is heat treating? Is it used for straightening the limbs? Keep up the good work. B.T.w. are you close to the U.P? you cant be far w/ the white stuff all around.
-
Jesse, that is one sweet bow there, love the quiver too....Brian
-
real nice bow, tiller looks to be near dead on,love the color too.

-
great job! like the dye. tiller is excellent.
-
I second what JJ just said. Very nice bow Jesse. Dye job is great and the tiller is spot on.
-
Thanks Jawge. You've given me a lot of help.
in da u.p. Thanks-- I rubbed some oil on the wood and used a heat gun to take some propeller twist out and to align the tips. Also cooked the belly a bit to stiffen it up. Thats a real brief description there is a bit more to it but not much :) Im about 40min south of menominee MI.
Thanks Koan
Thanks sailor Dad
Thanks juniper junkie
Thanks Keenan

-
that there bow may just get you that new hat ;)
-
I doubt that but thanks ;D
-
Wow! What everyone else has said too. That is a beauty. I'm working on an Osage recurve right now and was thinking about dying it with Rit. I think you've talked me into it now. Does Osage take dye well?
-
Thanks Okie1 I never tried to dye osage it has such a great natural color. Try on a scrap piece.
-
Good job Jesse. Nice lookin' bow! I'm sorry about your friend. I went through that last May. I had to put my Ol' Wilbur down. Funk is right. Again, very good job!
-
Thanks Denham Archer. yup I hear ya. At first I didnt want another dog. Know I have 2 pups one is from Pappy's dog Hanna.
-
Every time I think I may have a chance, some Troll comes along and screws it up! ;) Incredible bow Jesse. The tiller, the color, the finish...and she was definitely seduced into the beautiful bow she is. Pat
-
I thought Jesse was a CheeseHead, not a Troll, lol..I cant keep the U.P. guys straight ;D....Brian
-
Thanks a lot pat.
I think I might be a troll and a cheese head ??? ;D
-
Jesse, that bow is outstanding in all aspects. You should not have done this to Pat!! LOL. Steve
-
I thought Jesse was a CheeseHead, not a Troll, lol..I cant keep the U.P. guys straight ;D....Brian
Brian a Troll lives below da bridge in da lower peninsula, a cheesehead lives in Wisconsin, a sotahead is over in da Minnysota
and ya don't wanna know what a FIB is :o ;D
Jesse dat Yooperwood is da best eh, I might have ta sent ya a Yooper arra fer dat der sweet bow donchayano eh ;) :D 8)
-
beautifull bow, very elegant, love the colour
-
Beautiful bow. I think mapel is my favorite wood! I am assuming that it is hard maple. Thanks for sharing it with us.
-
A very nice bow... well done!! I am also a big fan of maple. Your tiller is spot on. Careful shooting it in the cold... especially self bows. I've had one blow up... wood becomes more brittle when it's cold. I usually don't shoot my selfbows outside in the winter.
-
I seem to faintly remember having that white stuff on the ground. It was wet and cold....
;D
Nice bow, tiller is great, and the stain really tops it off. Good job. :)
Sean

Thanks Badger

Thanks dragonman
thanks NTProf --yes its hard maple
Thanks Adb -- thats the first time I heard that about a selfbow in the cold. Im gonna take my chances but I will consider myself warned and when I get a big lump on the head I will remember your warning ;D
Thanks 1/2 primitive -- the white stuff is a faint memory here from June---Aug.
-
Jesse That is one bow that really catches my attention.. Great tiller just a over all wonderfull bow!! good job!!
David
-
Absolutely gorgeous. And the first entry for self bows for 2009. This way we can admire it for one more month.
Congratulations!
-
Thanks David --great to hear
Thanks Old bow--- very much appreciated :)
-
That's a real beaut Jesse. The tiller is killer and the finish is outstanding.
-
Nice looking bow for a cheesehead ! O wait i'm on too ;D
That Maple is some nice stuff to work. You'r bow looks like it is fast !
JohnK
-
That is one sweet looking bow there! You got me itching to get some maple and some red dye.
You said that is hard maple, care to explain to a newbie, I have lots of maple here in north carolina but none of it seems very hard that i have split for firewood.
-
Jesse, your bow is beautiful.Great job,I like everything about it.You mentioned you used brown rit dye,but how did you get it so red?God Bless
-
Thanks John and John K Yup were both cheese heads. Better than being yoopers I guess ;D
Thanks Chesjen-- yup its hard maple. hard maple is found mostly in cold weather areas and has bright leaves in the fall. The leaves and bark look different also. google it and you can see the difference. :) Im not the best plant Id guy ;D Hillbilly is the guy to ask.
PeteC Thanks-- Its just cocoa brown rit dye. It just comes out red like that. Ive used it before and it wasnt that red. Must be the mix of acetone. It didnt look near that red until I sealed it. Then the red just popped out.
-
WoW! Super nice bow Jesse! I am a big fan of Hard Maple myself, makes a great bow if laid out correctly and you did a great job of that. Congratulations!!!
Justin
-
Thanks J Bell --- another good thing about maple is its not to hard to find it nice and straight
-
WOW! - overall a really nice bow. great tiller, great details!
love it.
frank
-
Thanks Frank. Im surprised with the response this bows getting. Something about a self bow that makes them a whole lot more rewarding than with a backing. :) in my book. I mostly do boo backed which I love but making a self bow is just cooler :).
-
It's unanimous that's a sweet bow Jesse. I too make lots of backed bows, but I probably prefer getting the most out of a good stave as well.
Is that snow? ;D
Rich
-
Jesse the next staves I give ya aren't going to be nice and straight like that one >:D
Time for a tougher challenge buddy, I have a sister stave to bob :o You remember bob don't ya? ;)
-
Thanks Rich. Yup thats snow and its coming down again today. If we get 2 more inches it will be the new record for Dec. we already broke a hundred + year record :o
Dana that stave was nice and straight but It did have some prop twist and after taking that out one limb was way off to the side so I got to play with the heat gun a bit.
I do remember Bob. How could anyone forget bob with all those scars and gravel stuck in the back ;D I welcome the challenge.
-
Ya know Jesse, I just keep comin' back to look at your bow. That's my favorite style bow, flatbow with reflex. I think I'm gonna' have to try makin' one. If mine comes out half as good as yours did, I'll be a happy camper. Again, very good job.
-
Thanks Denham archer-------Go get some wood. Im sure your gonna make a great bow :)
-
Yessir Jesse, that is one sweeet bow! I bet it shoots as good as it looks too.
Are those tip overlays, or did you leave extra wood out on the tips to serve as "built in" overlays?
Either way it looks nice.
You don't post many, but when you do, it's something to look at.
-
Much appreciated Saw Filer Those are overlays of ebony. I got some cheap a while back and finally used up the last of it on this bow. I just got a buffalo hide and head so my overlays will be horn for a while now :)
-
Jesse, that's a mighty fine looking bow, all around just about as close to perfect as you can get. Great tiller, great detail work and finish, looks like a smooth shooter, too, I'll bet. Great job!
-
Thanks for the fine compliment Hillbilly. Ive been listening to you guys for a few years now. Guess its sinking in a little.
-
That's a beauty for sure. If I may, when you take photos with white backgrounds....like bright snow....use fill flash to highlight the subject. White backgrounds shut down the f-stop on auto cameras and you don't get much detail on the actual subject. Fill flash my friend and we will see more of that beautiful piece. Take some photos of that on a darker background, like a pastel blanket or deer hide, etc., so we can get a good look at her. Very nice.
-
Man that is a beauty, tiller looks great and the finish work is awsome. I love it ,great job. :)
Pappy
-
Thanks George--- My picture taking method is set the self timer and run. ;D
Thanks Pappy--- as mentioned at the top. You helped me a lot in the early stages. :)
-
Glad that came out so well for ya Jesse. Great job! 8)
-
Jesse, I'm sorry...this one got by me somehow without my seeing it until now. Really a good looking bow. The tiller looks great and a good job on the dye/finish work. I'm sure she will spit an arrow as well! Very nice! ;)
-
Thanks Greg. This was a few pages back. I didnt think it would get brought back up. You actually helped me giving me advice on it at the classic. Thanks again Greg your a class act.
Ryano your advice is the reason it doesnt have string follow ;)
-
Jesse, I agree with all that has been said. This is one of the most beautiful bows I have seen in a long time. I, too, have started using some maple, and I love it. It is so smooth--it just seems to want to bend. Your bow is gorgeous. The color is unusual but with the ebony tips and slight reflex, it looks good in all aspects. Well done.
Dan
-
Much appreciated Dan :)
-
This is the bow I received from Jesse today as my Christmas present, I couldn't be happier, and consider myself one of the luckiest guys around right now. I will Cherish this bow for a long time.
Thanks Jesse
Robb

I think the fact that Jesse gave this bow away speaks volumes about his character and also
makes the story behind the bow that much better. Speaks volumes for the type of folks that
you meet her on the PA board :) Well done Jesse, and I will replace the stave with a new one
maybe even more.
-
Dana, I agree with your comments concerning Jesse's character...he's quite a character, as are you! ;D Alll kidding aside, I found Jesse to be a fine fellow and really enjoyed our conversations during the Classic. His wife is very nice also! I'm glad yall are all planning to come back!
You're not half bad either Dana... ;) ;D
-
Can hardly wait to come back for more Tennesse hospitality Greg :)
-
Well what do ya say to that. Thanks. Dana you started this giving spirit around here and I think its been great for the group. I agree. Cant hardly wait for some southern hospitality and cooking. :)
-

I don't think I started the giving spirit Jesse but I sure do like giving stuff away and helping out a newcomer. Heck to me thats what this is all about,
I guess I just like to share my good fortune with others. There are so many good folk on here that it would be impossible to name then all :) I think my signature line says it all.
Thanks for the kind words though :)
-
That's as fine a bow as I can imagine. Bends fantastic, and looks great too. Thanks for posting.
-
A real pretty bow.
Pls tell me what is RIT ? I like the colour but i dont find a translation for the word rit...
