flax backing glue

  i finaly found some flax. it's in string form but sense it's not waxed i can do what i want with it.
 question; do i have to use hyde glue or is there another that will do.
 oh i forgot i'm talking about using it as a backing.

I did my string backed crossbow with white school glue. It's cheap, dries fast, and I don't care about water resistance because I seal over the string with shellac anyway.

I've never backed a bow with linen string, but I've backed two with flax strick (combed long-line flax).  I used hide glue both times.  I'm not sure if this applies when using string, but I pre-wet the material in water with a little soap added to it and blotted it to absorb any excess water prior to swirling it in the hide glue; pre-wetting the fiber made it soak up the hide glue better, and the soap in the water helped to negate the effects of the pectin in the fiber (the pectin makes it resist absorbing the glue).

Generous coat of wood glue...then apply dry flax string...then wrap (with ace bandage, or whatever).
