Some advice on straightening yew stave please
« on: August 03, 2022, 04:06:58 pm »
Hi all,
Would I be ok straightening on this knot ( and fill any gap that may occur?) I'm not sure how it will behave, I'll be bending away from  it, its 4 or 5 inches up from mid bow ( so a comparitvely static area) and will be 35mm X 32mm dimensions when I come to steaming it straight for a warbow/elb, . Or would it be advisable to steam an area a little north of the knot and have a kink a little up from the hand grip. Thanks for any advice,  I haven't had to deal with this before.
(I'll lose it on the back but some will remain on belly and side)

Steam bending a knotted area can be tricky, it can crack if you force it.

I would get the bow floor tillered( a relative term when dealing with warbows) before thinking about doing the correction.

Yes, use steam.

Why? If you clamp a string tip to tip does it fall on what would be the handle?

Thanks for replies and glad I checked. O.k, I will avoid that area and do as suggested.
All the best,

that doesn't really show anything useful. you need to wait until it is braced before making string line judgements.
It will crack if you try to bend it against that knot - think what the fibers are doing there!

It anyways would be better to completly remove the knot, following the grain and work wirh what you have, if possible. Then the dry heat or steam correction will not be critical. Going for an Elb there will be slight movement all over the bow and I wouldn't trust it with such knot leftovers on the edge. Cheers

Thanks simk,
I did see that done on a recent bow, (the billet bow I think), and I was pondering on that, I'll get it down near final dimensions and move over from it as much as I can. I got a fair amount to do, I'm getting the sapwood down a few rings too, so thinking way ahead on what options.
Many thanks,

Little magic cheat: probably lift out that whole knot with a chisel, leaving the clean grain 🤗

That looks great simk, I really like the look of knots done like  that...,  8)
I will remove what remnant of knot is left and follow the grain.
I'll view treating knots a little different now, thanks again all.  :OK
R.D.

Just added some pics....I got the centre down to dimensions and heatgun and oil just above and below the removed knot, I managed to get a  pretty good initial line up on handle, now to get it all down to dimensions. (Bottom pic the lower limb is closest on the left, wood marking the hand grip area and pencil marking position of knot prior to straightening, and lower limb is furthest on the right pic after straightening, I forgot to take the pic from the same end  ::).)

Ok, I've got back on this one, I left it a while as it was giving me a headache... I'm wondering how the tiller looks from others eyes. I'm pulling the bow 28"ish. The top limb starts on the left in the video until I swap it round half way(right in the photo). I've had to work to a weak spot about 7" north of centre. (I filled the gap of the removed knot with a piece of ash dowel, I'll try and make that look like a knot later). I am hoping for 120-130lbs @31", but not to fussed if a little lighter.
I have left it flatter and a little wider where those dips are and  the removed knot is, alsoat that weak spot.
Thanks for any input,
R.D.

Looks good to me.   I like the looks of that plug too.  It gives me some hope for mine I’m working on right now.  I used a yew heartwood plug with ea40.  What glue did you use?

That looks a good plug supadav95,
..after I removed the punky knot a piece of split half inch ash dowel looked a close fit, I shaped it a little to get a snug lay into the knot hole and clamped it down with a generous amount of superglue, when it was dry I filled any gaps with superglue and some fine oak sawdust followed by rasping and sanding flat. Seems to be holding up ok.
I'm going to paint in some stain growth rings to emulate a yew branch/knot, and leave some of the ash to look like sapwood. That's the plan anyway  :D
 R.D.
...well, something similar, I copied a side knot from another bow, walnut husk stain and a little black acrylic, protecting with a coat of danish oil while I finish the bow.
