With my cane arrows I don't use a finish only seal the sinew wraps with pitch varnish. On doweled shafts or hardwood shoot shafts I seal them once I get them straight. I do like to spin shafts on my finger tip to insure the shaft lines up so I sometimes add a point first then seal them. I've used spray satin poly, hand dipped in satin poly or added Tru-Oil as a finish then when that dries add the fletching. Be sure whatever finish you use it is compatible with your fletch adhesive.

I'm almost finished with my arrow. I really hope they like it. Sorry that I've been absent lately. Just super busy along with the wife and I house shopping.

Got a package from paulc today. Think its a river cane shaft/turkey wing fletching/and a knapped madison style point all held together with sinew and pitch glue. Great example of a eastern woodlands arrow. Hope to be able to take some pictures tomorrow and get them posted. Thanks Paul!
My arrow is all finished up just need to do the packaging and shipping.

It is Mike...the shaft is some kind of landscape/exotic cane that grows striped light/dark green here in Savannah. Pretty sure it is not native but it works. Turkey fletching from a buddy who had some wings/tails that decided he wasn't going to do anything with. Sinew is from my rifle hunting of deer on Fort Stewart and pitch mostly collected on Fort Stewart. It shot really well from my 50lb osage bow, 27-28"ish draw...I hope the shaft stayed straight! I left a couple sister shafts in my garage and they seemed to bow a bit with the humidity :-(
Best, Paul

I cleared some room in the inbox, so I guess I am back on the air! Dealing with a few not so minor challenges, such as Jacie's car dying dead,, and the creeping crud! Should still be able to ship by next week!

Here are some Pics from the arrow I got from paulc. Interesting fletching as the cock feather is shorter, not sure you can see except in the full lenght pic. I might need to test that out sometime. Any thoughts behind that Paul? But its great to have a back story behind pretty much all the materials! Thanks again Paul!

The shorter fletching is a mix of waste not want not, "this side up" clarity and I wanted to see how it looked/functioned....willing to bet I'm not the first person to try it... :-) Paul

That’s a nice arrow Mike nice point to Paul. I wish I could have gotten in this trade. I always enjoy the arrow trade, but I have been way too busy. Enjoy looking in once in awhile though.
I usually straighten shafts and then spray on a coat of clear satin. Then haft my point. Then I paint my markings on. I like putting on a clear finish before cresting. It helps prevent the paint from bleeding and makes my lines sharper. Also can wipe off if I make a mistake.
Then after my crest dries I lock it under a couple coats of sprayed on clear satin and then fletch and seal sinew.
