What string material for Red Oak Board bow
« on: January 19, 2023, 02:18:56 pm »
New to bow building and have made temporary strings out of fishing line (see pic) but really need to find the right type of material for my Red Oak board bows.  Have searched but must not be wording the question right.

using 4 to 6 strand of this line

I haven’t used fishing line. I know others have.

I started out with B-55 but I switched over to D-97 years ago and prefer it. It doesn’t hold a knot as well but I usually just make a double loop flemish twist string and that holds really well. I really like not having the stretch of the B-55.

B50 or B55   You could buy one 1/4# spool and make quite a few strings.

B55 is what I'm using.  It's really cheap for a 1/4lb spool, might even be cheaper than the fishing line.  It does have some stretch to it, but it will settle out after shooting a while.

To match what you are using D97.

Well, responses give me a good selection, B50 or 55, D97 or what I am using.  Had the fishing line on hand, its 200lb test and am not sure when I bought it or why.  So its safe for the bows to continue using?  Which will give me the best overall performance?
