58” 5 piece bamboo hunting bow
« on: August 08, 2022, 12:11:40 am »
So I started making this bamboo hunting bow for a buddy of mine as he loved shooting mine last year.  They are super easy to make and shoot quite well for what they are.  Also if they break no big deal either.  I decided to try a new camo pattern/ stain on this one let me know what you think…  it’s a mix of black, tan, yellow and green.  Wanted something that would blend in nice.  I’ve got to do the wraps on this bow yet and final tiller but other then that she’s almost ready to go.  Hoping to hit around 50# at 28” as that is what mine pulls.  I was fortunate to harvest a nice doe last year with this bow so my buddy is a little more convinced I guess that it can get the job done.

Here’s a couple pics

Cheers

Pretty sweet!
I like the stain. you can get cool effects by leaving the rind on in places. It absorbs dye differently but I guess you will already know that :)

Thanks mike.  Ya that’s what I sorta did here I guess. I put first layer of yellow and worked my way up to black then scraped lightly to break it up.   Bamboo is neat stuff.

Yes, very sharp looking bow. Can we see braced and full draw pics?

Thanks guys!  I enjoy making these in between other bows as they build pretty quick.  I did some shooting the other day before staining it and couple coats of tru oil. I’ll post some pics and full draw pics once it dries in a day or so and finish up the final wraps.  I’ll likley post a quick video too of some speed testing.  Thanks for looking.

Stay tuned….

Cheers.

Great work! Those indeed look tempting to me. But if the boo is long enough, why not making it a 3 piece with glued on handle? Cheers!

Thanks simk.  The poles I get locally are 5-6” diameter roughly and about 10 feet long but it’s harder to get longer limb sections with out vertical cracks.  I have done a few of the 3 piece ones too but harder to get good sections long enough.  I can easily get 25” long sections generally even from left over pieces.  This is why the 5 piece for me are more convenient it allows me to use up the smaller sections.

Thanks for looking.

Got this bow covered with couple coats of tru oil and shot in today.  Took some more pics in sunlight of stain.  I decided to stain the belly black as there were some unsightly black marks on the boo belly. I also added side laminated horn pieces to the string nicks.    Finished up at 48lbs at 28”.  Shoots well and smooth.  Very similar to my other one like this from last year.  Hope he likes it!

Here’s a short video of me shooting this bow.  400 grain arrow at 188fps.  Not too bad.   Also shot a 500 grain arrow at 176fps.  That’s gonna work for hunting!
