62″ Hophornbeam Stiff Tipped Flatbow
« on: August 02, 2021, 10:18:11 pm »
I'm a bit behind on posting. I finished this about a month ago. I built this assuming I'd never even get it through tillering due to the knots at the end. This is the worst side of the split. I love being surprised.

45#@28"
Tip to tip it’s 62″
the limbs are 1 3/8″ wide at the widest and are somewhat parallel to about quarter limb.
It has 11″ stiff tips due to the knot cluster.
the limbs are about 5/8″ thick off the fades to the center of the crown
the tips at the nock are about 1/4″ wide and have horn overlays
stained with  Fiebing’s Leather Dy in a camo type style with red and dark brown stain
arrow rest is whitetail antler
The belly was heat treated using the heat gun.
As I was heat treating it, it was clamped to a reflex deflex form
Finished weight (with string) 19.2oz

I started the split in the center to make sure I hade enough for two bows.
The hollow pith at the handle was filled with super glue.

A video at the bottom if you'd like to see more https://www.diy.timetestedtools.net/62-hophornbeam-stiff-tipped-flatbow/

I'm pretty happy it's still shooting. Thanks for looking. Critiques welcome. I learn a little every one I make.

Nice looking bow! I like the red/brown color combo. I would have never thought to try red but I may have to play around with that myself now.

I read an article recently about how a deer sees. It said a deer sees red like we see green. I just bought some green and light brown dye as well I'm going to experiment with.

Don, you are turning out some shooters lately...Looking at resting profile verses full draw profile, your recurves are working a bit at full draw...I can see the movement...It is also balanced, keep it going...Nice work

I have a 6 foot long, 2" plus wide peice of that stuff. I wasn't sure what it was, but it looks exactly like your photo.  I cut it in mid-May. It looks pretty dry and has lightened up, but I think I will wait until next spring to try to get a bow out of it.  I have read high praises for hophornbeam wood.

Nice work don.  Hornbeam is dense stuff.
Sticks and stones and other poky stabby things.

Looks good. Also staining.
Why didn't you induce more reflex?
IMO the tips could be much smaller, they look a bit bulky (just my 2cents)
