Rawhide-Backed Black Locust Kids Bows
« on: April 24, 2021, 04:48:34 pm »
My grandkids wanted to make a bow so we went into my shed and picked out a couple black locust staves that had been drying for over a year.

We made one bow 56” long and the other is 58”. They are 1-1/2” wide at the fades with pyramid design to 3/8” tips. The bows both pull ~30# @ 20”. I rawhide backed the bows just for extra protection and we dyed the backs with Fiebings leather dye in a sunburst design. We also used some Osage scraps for tip overlays.

I stitched a leather handle on both of the bows using artificial sinew. The finish is 4 coats of Tru oil rubbed in between coats with 0000 steel wool. My grandkids love shooting bows and I hope they get a few good years out of these two. Thanks for looking.

Love it Will. Great job. Looks like you have some really happy grandkids. That sunburst pattern came out great too. Way to go, getting them started in archery.

Making memories.Gotta love it.Looks like the kids are having a blast. They'll remember this moment their grandpa made them some super bows. Some bows they can grow with.Good work straightening those bows from staves.Really like the dye job also.
Nice to see everyone get involved.

Very nice looking bows. Those grandkids have better form than I do. Way to get them involved.
