I remember reading that burnishing,..could help.

But I always forget to do it,..I will rawhide back if I am worried,..I have finished the rawhide with super glue...then spray varnish

Big fan of burnishing myself. An Osage bow I finished a few months ago has never had a finish on it, just a thorough burnishing from tip to tip. It was aged Osage and I left it aged. It looks fine, but I am not sure the burnishing does much in terms of protection from lifting a splinter. It might have some small benefit, but it won’t save a bad back in my opinion.
