check out the farrier's rasp at 3 river's archery. its good for rough wood removal and floor tillering. a sharp hatchet will take long shavings if you choke up on the handle and swing with a controlled chopping motion. shavings will tend to follow the grain of the wood. watch for knots as they can cause splits to gouge deep into the wood. work knots with the rasp. a 4 in 1 rasp is excellent for everything from working backs and tillering down to the last few inches of draw. for final tillering and to remove tool marks use a good cabinet scraper or a sharp pocket knife. hold the blade at a right angle to the wood and pull it to you slowly. a peice of glass or a stone flake works too. the u-finish bows sometimes need a small adjustment of tiller. if you choose to get one string it and draw it in increments on a tillering tree or stick. check the draw weight as you go. hope this helps. have fun. -carpenter
