drying checks
« on: February 20, 2019, 07:08:28 pm »
I'm working on an Osage Orange stave that wasn't sealed during drying and has a few drying checks along the back. They're all contained within the perimeter and don't run off the edge.I flooded them with superglue and tillered as usual. It's  nearly finished and so far -so good. Should I be concerned about a blow-up?

I've done it a bunch of times and never blown up an osage bow.

I have a few. Never had a problem with them. Didn't realize that even years after harvesting staves when you chase ring you need to reseal back.

BJ, I keep a can of spray shellac on my work bench just for that reason. Just because a stave is seasoned doesn't mean it totally dry. The moisture content can fluctuate in a stave as it reaches equilibrium with the local R/H.
