Red Oak Hunter
« on: March 30, 2008, 04:58:23 pm »
Okay this bow is made of a red oak board from Home Depot. It is 68" ntn, the handle is 1 1/2 inches wide, and  the nocks are 3/8 wide. In the handle it is 3/4" thich (without leather) tapering to 3/8" at the nocks. It will draw 60# @ 26". The handle is built up by top grain leather and covered with rawhide. I couldn't let it be all store bought :)
It shoots exceedingly well. At 25-35yds it only needs minimal elevation with 750 grain arrows  ;D

Your tiller looks good, the braced bow looks good and the unbraced bow has just enough set!  ;) I would recommend that you round over all four edges so a splinter doesn't raise up and it will make the handle area more comfortable. About the radius of a pea should be sufficient. Well done!     Pat

Good job with that board, Kyle.  You've also tapped a great resource for bow wood. Home Depot, Lowe's etc usually have inexpensive, really straight grained wood for great bows. I'm setting you up for April Self BOM of the Month...that way we can enjoy your bow for one more month!
