Rainy nights good for knapping
« on: May 04, 2018, 08:42:36 am »
Had a good week farming working long days to get the sugarbeets planted before the rain. I always sleep good when it rains at night. Especially when I relax and knap first.

Looks good, Brian. That rock looks pretty shiny and black for Dacite. most of what I have is dull and gray.

Thanks Paul
Thanks Eddie. I'm pretty sure it Dacite. It flakes nice, almost like cheating. Feels a little light. I guess if it's not dacite I was misinformed. All the dacite I ever worked was black as coal and shinny.

I'll post a picture of a big piece I have tomorrow. I've never seen shiny Dacite, it is usually dull and harder than Obsidian.

Nice point!  Good rain, too!  We got 2" here finally!  Locally, we are ahead of the drought curve - for a while.  Got a bunch of snow up higher to help out.
Eddie, I need to pick your brain about older Bear bows, fg bows and turkey calls - will send a pm.

Thanks Eddie, maybe I've been misinformed. This is shinny black and flakes easily. I'm quite sure it's not as hard as most of the Obsidian I've ever worked. It's noticeably lighter in weight to. I've gotten this same material from three different sources. The reason I believe it's dacite is because when I first got some it was from my brother and he got it online from knapping supply company and that's what they called it. I got some from Frank at Marshall and he called it "stays wet" because it looks so shinny wet. Of course that means nothing as to its real ID. I think this is actually a piece that jeb gifted me.

Thanks bowmo. Still have a lot to learn yet but at least I can make something that's thin, fairly sharp and pointy.

Thanks Zuma. I'm actually thinking I might make another atlatl and dart. I kinda miss my old one
