1" width osage

So my good friend Erik from Pinaka Longbows gave me a leftover osage stave he did not want to mess with.
The stave is a little over one inch wide but plenty long. Now he suggested I make a elb style d-bow but I don't really like to shoot bendy handles and elb's in general.

Since I have never worked osage, do you experts think I could get away with the following:
I would like to try a reflex/deflex with a stiff handle, 66 or maybe 68 long of around 50/55 lbs, would osage be up for that?
I figure the deflex and length would compensate for the narrow limbs?

Osage is kinda magic around here so I would love to show up with such a design at the next 3d shoot

  If you closely monitor the set as you build the bow you can just build what it will give you. Simply back off on how much you are pulling when it first starts taking set. You might get 50# you might get 35# but either way it will be a good bow.

I'm no exspert but I found out after my first osage bow it doesent take much wood to make one, the bow in the pic started out 1 5/16 wide  65 ntn. it would probably could of made a 70 lb bow ,granite it's a D bow drawen to 29 in. but I had to narrow it to just over 1 in. after I got it to tiller ,to get it to 54 lb I think a lot has to do with the quality of the osage but at the length you stated I would give it a shot !

I have a 50# osage slight bend in the handle about 58" long and 3/4" wide. I have others that are 1 1/2" wide and took set. Depends a lot on the wood and how careful you are tillering.

I have a friend who makes what he calls splinter bows, very narrow, 64" 66" and any poundage. He hates to throw away any osage and will make bows out of what I would send to the burn pile.

Hello bud, Yes that should be plenty of wood to make one. I had a piece just like that. By the time i roughed out the limbs and shape of bow the limb width was 1" wide. The bow length was 66" long. I figured i was going to shorten it and make a youth/woman bow. To my surprise i was able to keep it pretty thick for the limb width. It was 3/8" thick with a deflex reflex design. This one was even snakey and had hills and valleys throughout the length of the bow. The pics are of this bow in roughed out form. It was right around 50#@26"

Thanks guys! I always tiller really slow and your comments gave me the confidence I can do it! Will try to get some progress pics up once I start. Eager to try my hands dirty on osage so will probably be this weekend

I already know the wood is pretty good quality because I shot my friends' 75 lbs bow yesterday and my piece is a leftover of that stave.

I'm starting to like the narrow bow designs. Haven't tried Osage yet, looking forward to seeing how she turns out.

sure, but I suspect that it may be kinda hard to hit that weight at that length, depending on how long you make your handle
