Don't know if you did or not, but while breaking the hide, did you notice it being more stuff and tougher to break between te shoulders and te base of te tail? A good way to thin this down is to hit it with an angle grinder with a sanding disk until the hide is a uniform thickness. At least it works once the hide as been fleshed, stretched and dried. You end up with a big pile of rawhide dust that should work great for use glue.
You can make some pretty one up hides look great with a little needle and thread and a washing with hair conditioner.
