Yeah, finding mushrooms is a primitive skill
Passed down through the generations.
I'm a novice and also at it for many years.
Do not eat any mushroom unless you have
totally researched it extensivly.
Actually just being able to identify what is
out there is fun and could be an asset some
where some time.

That sure looks like one
Make sure the under side is smooth
and NOT gilled. The plates should be meaty.
Beware of the Jack O Lantern. It is the same color.
See if you can find a local expert to check it for you
before ingestion. It is recommended to just eat small
portions of found mushrooms at first. Some folks can
have alergies to safe mushrooms etc.

That's a great skill to have Zuma, mushroom picking. I'll keep an eye for some chicken in the woods...I read it grows here too, but not to eat if found on yew trees or cedar I see. Thanks.

Yep, Ruddy,
Not so much skill as caution. Just the time of year can matter
when it comes to toxcidity.
Don't mess with this look alike that I found today. Jack-O-Lantern.
Looks very similar on top but the gills on the underside are the
best clue to leave this killer alone. Death by mushroom is nasty.

Did that jack's gills glow in the dark? A fresh picked one should glow a faint green in the absence of light.  I found some the other day and really wanted to see them glow, but they didn't. Maybe it's not a dominant trait throughout the entire species. I thought the ones I found were chantrelles. I've found jacks before but this particular patch was very similar in appearance to the orange chantrelles. Glad I caught it. That would have made for an awful tummy ache for a couple days. I don't think jacks are considered deadly, just toxic, destroying angels and fairy ring mushrooms on the other hand...

LOL I never looked at them at night .
I still have the one in photo. May take a look before
releasing it.
With a crappy imune system any of these toxic mushrooms
could make you want to die if they don't kill ya.
