ever try the ulna bone for pressure flaking?

Like a lot of other ABO knappers I use an ulna bone for my notches. I have started to use the ulna for pressure flaking too. I just turn the bone sideways and pressure flake with it. now most of my points are birdies and I do like obsidian so I'm not sure of the results on other stone. Give it a try you may like it, I use it more than antler now. Ed

I find I get the best results with my ABO tools on obsidian and glass. I prefer the ulna for pressure flaking and antler for percussion. As the stone's hardness increases, I tend to increase the hardness of my tools. When I work rhyolite, I usually end up with a small ball peen hammer after getting frustrated when I can't get a flake with anything else. I may end up making a little hammer-like bopper from a small hard hammer stone and trying that.

I have used ulna bones from deer I have taken. I am not overly impressed with them on harder rock. I am certain on obsidian it would work well. From medium sized whitetails the bone is not thick and chips easily. It does not take long for it to shorten. It also needs a little edge grinding or filing a lot to keep a blunt edge from the edge breaking off or crumbling. I do a lot of rhyolite knapping and it is necessary to get good edge flakes to thin the point before even trying an ulna bone. They will work but I rarely use one now. I have seen pictures of ulna bone artifacts with long sharp points described as knapping tools. From my expierence it wouldn't even make one good edge flake.
Perhaps heavy mule deer or big northern whitetail bucks may have stronger ulnas but I would be surprised if they did much better.
